Guest guest
from my online class Alternative Treatment for Measles I am not an expert in herbs or herbal treatment, so can't advise. There are many webpages if you do a google search on measles and herbs, but I don't know enough to tell you if their recommendatoins are good ones. I personally don't think herbs or drugs are necessary and feel that usually the body is able to handle with help of vitamins, fluids, and homeopathy if necessary KEY 1. Be sure rash comes out in a timely way after becoming ill (hard to know, I know, if your child has measles in this day and age. But if Koplik spots in mouth and has been exposed to measles, then be aware of timing on this from Lesson 3A) 2. Vitamin A - more to follow 3. Allow the symptoms to happen - do NOT suppress any of them or stop or palliate any of them 4. No fever reducers if at all possible and especially no aspirin 5. No antibiotics (this is a virus) (unless serious complications and require them) 6. Adequate fluids, especially if a fever 7. Monior for dehydration - What is dehydration? Dehydration occurs when an infant or child loses so much body fluid that they are not able to maintain ordinary function. Dehydration may be caused by not drinking enough water, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever. If a child has a severe case of dehydration, he or she may not be able to replace body fluid by drinking or eating normally. Monitor by being sure your child is urinating adequately and doesn't show signs of dehydration - persistent fatigue, lethargy, muscle weakness or cramps, headaches, dizziness, nausea, forgetfulness, confusion, deep rapid breathing, or an increased heart rate, excessive loss of fluid through vomiting, urinating, stools or sweating, poor intake of fluids, " can't keep anything down " , sunken eyes, dry or sticky mucous membranes in the mouth, skin that lacks its normal elasticity and sags back into position slowly when pinched up into a fold, decreased or absent urine output, decreased tears. For children, especially: Dry tongue and dry lips No tears when crying Fewer than six wet diapers per day for infants and no wet diapers for eight hours in toddlers Sunken soft spot on infants Sunken eyes Dry and wrinkled skin Deep, rapid breathing Cool and blotchy hands and feet Self-Care Tips 1. Do not give aspirin or any medication that has salicylates to anyone under 19 years of age. Avoid anything else such as Tylenol or Calpol or Paracetamol...very hard on the liver and the liver is working overtime to detoxify the body........See fever info given in Part 1 of Class 2. Isolate your child from other people who have not had measles. 3. If you want a definite diagnosis, must have labwork done. Also if definitely measles, must be reported to health department. 4 Because your child's eyes may be sensitive: Keep the lighting in the house dim. Draw the drapes, pull the shades down, and use low-wattage light bulbs. 5. If your child must go outdoors, have him or her wear sunglasses. Keep the TV and video games turned off. Urge your child not to read or do close-up work. 6. For a cough: Use a " cool-mist " vaporizer, especially at night, if necessary. Use distilled, not tap, water in the vaporizer and change the water daily. 7. Give your child plenty of fluids (purified/filtered water). Water is helpful in loosening mucus and also soothes an irritated throat. 8. Fruit juices are also good (natural, organic without sugar, preferable). 9. Have your child rest until the fever and rash go away. 10. Keep your child home from school until 7-10 days after the fever and rash disappear and until his or her appetite, strength, and feeling of well-being are back to normal 11. Rash - do NOT put anything on the rash to suppress it. If the rash is itchy do not use any drugs or medicated cream to suppress. Work with the problem with homeopathy if possible. Use baths or oatmeal baths if necessary - grind rolled oats in a blender or food processor, put a couple tablespoons in a handkerchief or dishrag & hang it from the faucet when you draw the bath. Trim fingernails if rash is itchy. Also encourage not to scratch. 12. Rash SLOW to come out - very important to assist this if this is the case. Those children who have a rash that is slow to come out, are those that have deeper complications in many cases. Use warm/hot baths to bring the rash. Also appropriate homeopathic remedy will facilitate this. 13. Vitamin A - I will send a separate article on this - this is VITAL to be given to your child (see another lesson) 14. Vitamin C - see Lesson 2G, Parts 10 & 11 - as sodium ascorbate form 15. Homeopathic Remedies as necessary (see email to follow) 16. Watch for complications - such as, especially: a. dehydration - see above under Key - #7 b. ear infections - otitis media - still can be treated naturally - breastmilk in ear, homeopathy, etc. c. pneumonia d. encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) - symptoms are change in level of consciousness, headache, seizures copyright, Sheri Nakken, 12/2004 Sheri Nakken, former R.N., MA, Hahnemannian Homeopath http://www.wellwithin1.com/homeo.htm & http://www.wellwihtin1.com/vaccine.htm ONLINE/Email classes in Homeopathy; Vaccine Dangers; Childhood Diseases - next classes start in September
