Guest guest
I took my 4yo and 17 month old to the doctor's today. The doctor looked at them and said, " Well, you are up to date on your shots, right? " I said that neither of these children have had any vaccinations. He said that he thought that it looks like they have mumps. We are 7 in my household. *My husband had mumps as a child *My completely vaccinated 10yo had fever and sore throat for about a week *My husband and I have had low grade <100 fever, sore throat, headache and nasal drip lasting 4-5 days *My 9yo mostly vaccinated and 5yo vaccinated children have shown no symptoms. *The 4yo and 17mo have bulging gland swelling, just like the pictures of mumps on the right sides, not so severe on the left sides and the swelling on the left seems to grow and get smaller. SO, I kept trying to nail the doctor down on " what if it's not mumps " and " are there any mumps in Texas right now " He said he wasn't aware of a mumps outbreak in Texas. He was dismissive of it being something other than mumps as the children weren't vaccinated. None of my older three children ever had a swelling like this in their parotid glands. The doctor said that the only thing that he was aware of that would cause this kind of swelling is if there are stones in the gland. He didn't suggest doing to blood work to make sure that it is mumps. So, we don't have a definitive " Yes " on it being mumps. He did check my 17 month old's testicles. There was no swelling. The 4 yo is a girl. SO, anyone had the mumps? Thought they had the mumps and determined it to be something else? Have you had a swelling that looked like this? Both children have a lot of energy, have not had fever over 100, and seems to be eating and drinking fine. Thanks for any help.
