Suggestion for vaccine refusal form

After what Dr. Jay Gordon said yesterday, it makes a lot of sense

that doctors are asking parents to sign some type of form. Here are

my thoughts on the subject.

Thoroughly read the refusal form that he/she is asking you to sign

(take it home and let them know that you need time to look it over/go

over it with your spouse). Just because the AAP has their

own " incriminating refusal form " doesn't necessarily mean that it is

the one that your doctor will use. (The AAP clearly states on their

website that another version may be used by the doctor or patient).

The AAP also advises that it is not good practice to refuse seeing

the patient either. However, it is a judgement call for the doctor's

comfort level as to whether or not the relationship should be

terminated.

Have a heart to heart talk with your doctor. Ask if he/she would be

willing to accept a revised version of the form. Tell him/her that

you will make sure that your revised form will clearly indicate that

you would not hold the doctor liable in the event that your child

contracts a vaccine-preventable disease.

My suggestions for a revised form are as follows:

1. It should state that the parent will not hold the doctor

responsible in the event that the said child contracts the vaccine-

preventable disease. Make sure that you also indicate that you

understand that each vaccine does not guarantee immunity 100% either

because it depends upon the strains that you are vaccinating against

and what strains are " going around " .

2. Clearly state that you also understand that if your child is

vaccinated and suffers a serious reaction, the doctor nor the maker

of the vaccine can be held liable. Though you may be able to file a

Vaccine Injury Compensation Claim, it doesn't guarantee payment for

certain types of injuries. This is another risk that you are not

willing to take because you just may be held liable for all medical

costs associated with said injury.

3. Clearly outline a lengthy list of adverse reactions associated

with all of the vaccines. State that you feel that these risks are

exactly that - a risk that you are not willing to take due to

possible outcome stated in section 2.

4. Clearly outline that you and your doctor have discussed the

risks/benefits for every vaccine (be sure to list all of the vaccines)

and that you are declining at this time. In the event that you ever

change your mind, you will discuss all available options with your

doctor.

Bottom line is that your doctor is only looking to cover his butt.

If you set the form up in a way that relieves his liability, but at

the same time indicates that you are not willing to take any such

risk for any vaccine that does not offer 100% immunity - you should

not have a problem.

You should also suggest to your doctor that the medical community

should get together and try to pass legislation to change that bogus

flaw with the system. Doctors should not be held accountable if the

parents choose not to vaccinate. It is wrong! It is the parent's

decision not to vaccinate.
