Guest guest
I dont know what to tell ya really.? We dont do the whole " well-child " visit thing.? The name well child visit itself is just ridiculous to me.? Do you feel there is something he is behind on cognitively/socially? Your mommy instinct is better then any doc.? I personally would never want a doc accessing my kids development because the NORM has such a WIDE range in real life, but a very small range medically.? They LOOK for problems. 15 mo check up - debating to go Our son, , has his 15 mo check this monday....we have held off on all vaccinations.... Even though our Ped doesn't really say much, they always give us the " we have to inform you because we are medical professionals " speech on how vaccinations are mercury free, safe, wonderful...etc..........we always listen and politely say, " we are holding off for now " ....is there another way to cut them to the chase so we don't even have to listen to the speech?.....Do they really have to inform us, or is that just what they say to hopefully change our minds? The only thing that came to mind was saying " as a parent, we are not vaccinating currently, so we can stop this discussion now " ....or something like that....but I don't want to be rude or have an uncomfortable visit. Reason I want to go to this appt Dr. is supposed to check his cognitive/social developmental..... Any helpful dialogue will be appreciated. Thanks so much, , (15 mo), Ben (dh)
Guest guest
I wondered about this myself. I'm actually meeting w/a holistic doctor to see about switching. I plan to be up front with my position, let him give his speech (I assume he'll have one), and then see if we can be done with the discussion. I figure - if I ever should change my mind, I'd definitely let them know! Otherwise, they aren't going to say anything to change my mind as things currently stand in the world of vaccinations. I would so LOVE not to have to hear it every visit (not that there are many since I cut out wbc) and LOVE not to have them try to make me feel like a bad mom. > > Our son, , has his 15 mo check this monday....we have held off on all vaccinations.... > > Even though our Ped doesn't really say much, they always give us the " we have to inform you > because we are medical professionals " speech on how vaccinations are mercury free, safe, > wonderful...etc..........we always listen and politely say, " we are holding off for now " ....is there > another way to cut them to the chase so we don't even have to listen to the speech? ......Do > they really have to inform us, or is that just what they say to hopefully change our minds? Guest guest
Hi! Quite honestly, I have yet to find a pediatrician that is familiar with milestone achievements (they may act like they are though). A recent study concluded that 80% of doctors do not know where a baby should be. Neither of my son's doctors were aware of when they should be doing what. I was very concerned about both of my kids and the doctors were not. It turns out that my Mommy instinct was right on because they were both delayed. I would avoid the docs like the plague right now (to avoid signing the vaccine refusal form). Google milestone achievements (www.babycenter.com also) and you will find a lot of info. That is what I do by month (I have a 16 mo. old). If you are concerned about development your doctor wouldn't be the one to handle it anyway...it is usually a group like Easter Seals (for intervention). > > Our son, , has his 15 mo check this monday....we have held off on all vaccinations.... > > Even though our Ped doesn't really say much, they always give us the " we have to inform you > because we are medical professionals " speech on how vaccinations are mercury free, safe, > wonderful...etc..........we always listen and politely say, " we are holding off for now " ....is there > another way to cut them to the chase so we don't even have to listen to the speech?.....Do > they really have to inform us, or is that just what they say to hopefully change our minds? Hi Do you think the ped really has a clue what his cognitive/social development should be? Do you have concerns? Sheri listowner
Guest guest
I've been going back and forth about this as well. Â On the 'go' side, our ped has been open to non-vaxing, read " Children With Starving Brains " and has agreed to work with me if I want nystatin or something that must be rX. I do want to maintain a good relationship with her, and I think doing that may help her help other children in her practice. Â On the other hand, it's $85 down the drain for her to tell me my son is healthy. I think I'll wait for the 18 month check-up. Guest guest
Best off to check with an experienced parent whom you trust to tell you if your child seems normal. I bet it won't cost you a co-pay, either! To get them off your case, I would just say (and have): " no offense, but you're wasting your time trying to tell me something I likely have researched more than you have. Now can we please get this child checked? I have other things to do. Guest guest
My son has been to the ped. once since he was 15 months old and the Dr. didn't even get to give him a full check over - DS wasn't having anyone he didn't know near him, he is now 28 months. My DD is 4 months and her 3 month WBC was her last. I don't need to waste $$ or time having a quack tell me my kids are healthy, growing and meeting milestones. I have Babycenter.com's chart for milstones saved to my PC so I can always check that over. My kids are usually right on or have a few things slightly above. I don't plan on going back unless there is something wrong I can't handle. Why bother if you are not vaccinating? Put the $$ you would spend on the visit either in the child's savings account or use it to buy yummy organic groceries. -Kristi > Our son, , has his 15 mo check this monday....we have held off on all vaccinations. ... <SNIP> > Reason I want to go to this appt Dr. is supposed to check his cognitive/social developmental... Guest guest
I work in Early Intervention and I can tell you, most pediatricians have no clue about child development and they defer to us in many cases. I would never go to a doctor just to check on development - not worth the time - unless they are a specialized developmental pediatrician, of which there tend to be very few. Melinda C. in Mass.
