All I know is she went on holiday to Eastbourne (Sussex) in 1928, where she had a slight cut in a rock pool (I believe). Shortly after returning, she contracted a condition that the doctors called " Infantile Paralysis: " She was 7, and developed the paralysis very swiftly. One minute she could walk, the next she couldn't. She had electric shock treatment to (allegedly) prevent the polio going to her lungs, and suffered severe atrophy of her leg muscles as a consequence. She wore calipers for a couple of years and had a lifelong limp, but as the doctors then said she wouldn't walk again, this was a good outcome I suppose I would love to have got to the bottom of this, but she is sadly no longer alive and there is no-one in the family who would know more. Perhaps she had recently been vaccinated, as polio in any number of its hundreds of guises, seems to be a fairly common side-effect of many vaccinations. - From the list of vaccine intro dates posted by Sheri. 1923 Diphtheria 1926 Pertussis 1927 Tuberculosis (BCG) And OT, my sister had cellulitis following cuts on her feet from rocks at the beach 4 years ago. When her dr said antibiotics were the only answer, she said she felt sure there was something else she could do, so he threatened her with the possibility of septicaemia. She believed she could deal with infection, and kept washing it with H2O2 and dressed it with dry herb, golden seal. She took capsules as well and healed without scarring.
