Guest guest
Lynn -- If you really want to wrap your mattress in plastic, tell your husband that there are fungi that feed on the fire retardant chemicals in mattresses, and that these fungi produce toxic fumes. The best way to protect yourself from the fungi and fumes is by wrapping the mattress in plastic. I learned about this from reading about Dr. Jim Sprott of New Zealand's SIDS research. These links mostly talk about SIDS, but it seems that mattress chemicals and fungus are probably not good for adults either. Here is a quote from one of the articles: " In regards to SIDS, the toxic nerve gases responsible for crib death are different from the chemicals that off-gas. These toxic gases are formed when a fungus, which grows in used mattresses, consumes the chemicals in the mattresses. So even when your mattress no longer has that " new mattress smell, " the danger is still there for your baby. It is important to note that ALL conventional mattresses, from crib to adult sizes, have these same chemicals, most notably fire retardants. So in regards to SIDS, a baby is not safer in an adult bed. I still may try one, but it will have to be a deluxe one. I tried a cheapy one at someones house and it crippled me up right quick. I have a pocket in the left hip socket that has hardly any cartilige left. If that hip does not rest just right it hurts and irritates. Also when I walk; especially stairs. It will sometimes hit the pocket. For less than a split secound the hip bone will have dead air and all power goes out of the leg and I take a tumble. > > I tried again to talk hubby into wrapping the mattress now that it has a hole in the zippered encasement. I explained to him how inexspensive it would be and he said he was not going to wrestle any bed to mummyfy it. I just hope that once the hole is bigger and more bugs eating any mold inside will leave me alone and if there is mold that it does not reinfect me. I am worried quite a bit and feel I need to sterilize the mattress to kill mold and bugs at the same time. Mattresses are so deep though I would not have a clue how deep I would need to clean and if it is possable to dry it enough in one day to keep moisture from starting anything back up again. If I could afford it I would take it to the dump and start again. But no sense doing that yet until I do not have to spray anymore. I could just see a new mattress getting the same problem from my spraying twice a day all the bedding that is. > > In Light Lynn
