Washed all bedding today and decided to add in some spices inside the pillows. I am very slowly replacing them. My main pillow is a feather one that the kids bought years ago for a present. You open its zippered encasement and the whole end of the pillow is open and all the feathers sneak out. It was a nightmare. Each little movement caused bits of feather to stick to everything I had just cleaned. Even me head to toe. So I ended up cleaning twice. You should have seen me try to zipper it shut and gently take out air and it was everywhare. Was fairly bug free until I started carring around bedding and cleaning. Now I am at a friends house. They are out target shooting while I stay in from the heat. Darn. I get left out when wheather or hips are in the way. I am not sure why I am even more buggie here than home. I showered and changed clothes so it could be bugs finally digging in from my clothes. It is real light case of buggieness. But still more than any of us care for. Either that or its just the enviroment because they are everywhare and I am advertiseing here. Well hope others stay cool and as bug free as possable. The morning was really good with no bugs until I had to carry some of the bedding. By than it was almost noon. Even than it was only 1 or 2. Now I have a small handfull here and there. Next pay period the feather pillow has got to go. In Light Lynn
Guest guest
Lynn -- It sounds like the bugs are attracted to you. They are in many homes, and this is the buggiest time of year. Have you tried an herbal bug repellent? You might be able to make your own by adding some essential oils to your lotion. Take care, myrtle > > Washed all bedding today and decided to add in some spices inside the pillows. I am very slowly replacing them. Guest guest
Hon, you need to get rid of that pillow. Birds have feathers - birds have mites. It probably is like spending the night at gramma's for those mites! All those nice juicy feathers. I bought a Kmart pillow, Joe Boxer, supposed to be hypoallergenic, and it doesn't give me any problems at all. > > Washed all bedding today and decided to add in some spices inside the pillows. Guest guest
If I'm going out to a place that may be buggy, I use a local product called Organic Bug Block, that I buy at the drugstore. Here's a link that shows the ingredients: http://www.mauiexcellent.com/orbugbl.html I also use their Aloe Lavender Cooler as a bug repellent: http://www.mauiexcellent.com/allaco.html If I'm in bed and I get any sense of bugs in the room, I use Cedarcide's Best Yet Insect Spray. I only have to spray a little bit on the top of my head and the bottoms of my feet, and that seems to keep any bugs away. My cats sleep in the bed with me, and sometimes they bring bugs into the bed. myrtle > > > > > > Washed all bedding today and decided to add in some spices inside the pillows. Guest guest
Don't toss the pillow! It was a gift from your kids. Just put it in storage until this whole thing blows over. The one thing i regret is tossing so many things that i really liked or cared about. Guest guest
Lynn, I can understand why you would want to toss the pillow. It's possible that those of us who contracted this disease from microscopic bird mites will never be over it until almost all the disease-carrying mites or disease-carrying pests (which gave us the disease) in our environment are dead. The smallest subspecies of Bird mite survive for years as adults with a blood meal for any mammal, so it may be a super long time if we don't toss or sanitize the stuff the mites nest in somehow. There is evidence that these bird mites also can live in a person's skin, respiratory tract epithelium, and GI tract epithelium, and are very hard to get rid of internally in these areas. That may be one of the reasons why the IR sauna and detox/cleanses are so important in getting to the sources of the disease. We recently had a HUGE upswing in microscopic mite activity ( finding many microscopic blood-filled mites again) and in internal symptoms after getting some things out of our garage that had been packed away in the garage for well over a year. We washed them thoroughly in a way we thought was good enough before bringing them in. I realize that eventually one is cured from this disease and no longer has symptoms everywhere they go... but I think the original disease carrying culprits need to be eradicated from the environment and from the inner & outer skin of the body. Or at least the disease carrying pest need to be significantly reduced to a tiny remaining in the environment and internally. Otherwise I believe that microscopic pests on our internal/external skin will attract other microscopic mites/pests from the surrounding environment continually (which is what they seem to do somehow) and a full-blown re-infection or re-infestation may occur. z3 > >> > > > >> > > Washed all bedding today and decided to add in some spices inside the pillows. Guest guest
Agree with Z3 here Lynn. I do think you could keep the pillow if you did the following:1. take off plastic cover2. put the pillow in the oven at a low temperature of 150 degrees, no higher!3. leave the pillow in the oven for at least an hour at this temperature. This would kill off any stage of mites, regardless of type of mite or insect. This, however, does not mean that the pillow would not continue to hide mites if the plastic case had a hole in it, or the zipper were not covered. These things are so capable of going through the tiniest of holes. However, once again, if you took your pillow and put it through the oven again, like once a week or even once a month, that should be enough to keep the darn things out of the pillow. Using an uncovered pillow could be catastrophic! Mites are attracted to feathers. A dryer won't due. Most dryers do not get hot enough to kill mites. Re: Feather Pillow Auugggghh! Guest guest
Also, you would need to get a new cover each time you cooked the pillow because the inside of the plastic cover could hide mites and reinfest the pillow. I burned too many things in the microwave to make this an option. Pillow would be flammable in the microwave and oven. But you can control the oven better than the microwave. We did my hubby's jeans in the oven for a long time until I started doing his jeans in the Singer steam press. That eliminated the need for the oven. Re: Feather Pillow Auugggghh!
