Hi,

My name is April and my husband and I live in Colorado with our three

wonderful kiddos, ages 5, 6 & 7. We adopted all of our children from S.

Korea and have very little health history from their birth families so I

have no idea if immunizations were an issue for them. Here is my reason for

joining the group...

Our youngest dd had her 5 yr old check-up on Tues. Despite my concerns over

giving 4 vaccinations at one time, I let our pediatrician convince me

everything would be fine. And since it was with my older two children, I

believed him. (If only I could go back in time.)

18 hrs later the vomiting began. She threw up every 15min for hours and

hours and hours. Then the fever started. Then she became very lethargic. She

just laid on the bed and wouldn't even watch cartoons -

she just stared at the wall and fell asleep every 2 minutes. The minute this

all began I called our pediatrician's office and spoke w/ the doctor on

call. (It was 5am.) He said to keep her hydrated and

she would be fine. I let it go a few more hours and then called the office

and insisted on taking her in.

Our Dr. said he thought it was a reaction to her DTaP vaccination. He

recommended Tylenol suppositories to get her fever down and told me to keep

her as hydrated as possible. He said if this is as bad as it is going to get

we could expect it to last another 48 to 72 hours. If it is going to get

worse we would be watching for seizures next. He said, " Well at least she

doesn't have to have this one again

until she is 12 or 13 " . My thought was, " What?! Why would I ever let them

give this to her again?? "

She slept all evening. She didn't even complain about the suppositories. I

gave her a sip of fluids or an ice chip every second she was awake. But then

the twitching began. It wasn't a seizure (our oldest dd has had febrile

seizures and this was not like that) but more a rhythmic twitching while she

slept. I called the doctor again immediately and was told " it could just be

her body's reaction to the immunizations " but we didn't need to bring her in

unless her fever was over 104.5 or she had a " full blown seizure " .

So I put her in bed right next to us and watched her sleep all night. She is

very sleepy again this today but the vomiting has stopped. She is EXTREMELY

emotional and not herself at all. The fever is down to around 99.5. My

biggest concern right now is random nonsensical sentences. She will

suddenly say something that makes NO sense at all, stop and look confused,

and then quickly try to go on. I feel very lost as I don't know what to

expect, what I should be doing for her, and I feel like we were left very

much on our own.

I appreciate a place to come for support and any insight/advice any of you

may have to share and am grateful for the opportunity to look through all of

the information on this site.

April
