Hi Winnie --

I can't say I was worried about DS getting Pertussis (partially vaxed due

to a reaction to DPT) -- call me naive but I figured that if all the other

kids were vaxed, he wouldn't/couldn't -- live and learn! In 9th grade he

got Pertussis -- the only non vaxed kid in town to get it. So much for the

protection from the vax for all those kids that were fully vaxed!

Good luck with that new driver in your house. Yes, it's scary, and

unfortunately it's no better when they go off to college -- I don't think

I'll ever not worry!

College is next, and I'm thrilled he'll be going here in CT where I know the law

very well. I have to say some not so small part of me worried about that while

he applied to colleges in different states. When all that brouhaha over land

force vaccinating was going on, I crossed those schools off the list! NY, too.

So, when your son got Pertussis, did they culture it or just assume he had it?

Hi Winnie --

They cultured it, but felt it was a formality since we had an " outbreak " at

the time.

Where are you in CT? I'm in NY. DS college required no new vaxs, although

I think they required MMR (which is one of the few he had). From what we

were told, it depends more on the school than the state.

Has he decided on a major?

Hi, . I'm in Litchfield. My son is going into music ed, which I am thrilled

about although I didn't expect him to decide this soon. Anyway, I don't know

about the requirements depending on the school rather than the state. Maybe it

means how hard of a time they give you? They'd better not give me one. I don't

want to have to get fierce!

On another note, here's a little story for those who are wondering if their

children are listening to our vaccine concerns. Understand that I am the head

honcho of the family when it comes to health care, education and the multitudes

of paperwork that go with that. My husband means well, but we don't completely

trust his judgment ever since he took the dog to the vet for some minor problem

and came home with all her booster shots because they said she was due!!!

Well, my son is going on a school trip to Italy soon and a health form is

required. Imagine my panic when he informed me that Dad filled it out and it was

already handed in. I asked what they wrote on it and said son joked that they

asked for him to be vaccinated with everything. Haha. Then he told me that they

wrote the usual " no vaccines to be given, not even tetanus " and to authorize him

to take arnica for any injuries, etc. I had no idea either of them knew I put

that. There is hope for the future.

Exactly my thoughts

I wouldn't intentionally expose to vaccine strain. Would that even

give immunity to wild strain?

Or maybe all that is out there is vaccine strain - who

knows..........would have to do some digging

Hi Winnie --

I'm in Mahopac NY, just west of Danbury, CT.

It's nice to know your family is listening. My DD is going on her class

trip to DC. They sent home the usual release form and asked about allergies

and meds. I wrote " allergic to cough syrup " signed it, filled in the

emergency contact info and sent it back -- they sent back to ask what brand

of cough syrup is she allergic to -- I wrote back " All - do not give. " Then

they send back, what about pain reliever/fever reducer -- I sent back a note

that she hasn't had any in so many years I don't know. They make me nuts

with this stuff! She's only going for 3 days -- you'd think she was going

to the end of the Earth for a month!

I know, it's ridiculous. I mean, I understand they are trying to be responsible

but this " we at least need to have authorization to give him

Tylenol/Advil " ...geez, if they're in that much pain, they'd better be

hospitalized to find out what serious injury they have! I have gotten some

pretty fierce I'm About To Call the Men in White Jackets glares when I tell them

I won't give painkillers to my kids, as I whip out my arnica instead.

What's really strange is I was told that when the kids go to Italy, they can

keep the Tylenol, etc. on them. So, they can't have pills on them in school (not

a bad rule, mind you) but they can carry them freely when they're loose in

another country?
