Most nurses who administer vaccines are just doing what they've been taught and what is required of them on their job. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2008 Report Share Posted March 22, 2008 I was born and raised in NM. I now live in Colorado, thankfully! Things are MUCH easier on us here as far as the vax issues go. When my first son was born at home in 2005, we were SHOCKED to receive a letter from the governor himself lecturing on the importance of vaccinations and adhering to the schedule. The used our birth certificate application to track us down. I can't remember what their immunization goals are, but they are REALLY high there. You can't turn on the local TV stations there without being bombarded with advertisements - mostly the " free public service " type announcements from all the local celebrity news anchors - on the importance of vaccines. My son and I were featured in a piece on Channel 7 News there regarding HypnoBirthing, and at that interview my midwife and I mentioned the vaccine controversey, and the fact that vaccines were unsafe. The anchor stated at the time, " Get me proof and I'll go on the air with that... now THAT would be a story! " I sent her a bunch of information regarding vaccines but never heard back from her. I'm certain the powers that be at the station would never let her go through with a story like that. I was deathly afraid to take my child to a mainstream allopathic doctor in New Mexico, so I didn't. I had to go to my primary care physician for something unavoidable for me after the birth of my child. I took my then four-month-old with me and decided to broach the subject of vaccines and how he felt about the issue, thinking maybe I could let my child be seen by our family doctor that we'd been going to for 10+ years. His response was " I think you are stupid... I think you are igorant... I think you are wrong. I've seen children die from Pertussis. But I will not refuse to treat him because you do not vaccinate, I'll just have to have you sign a waiver. " He didn't care that I am vaccine injured, stating that it probably was just concidence that I had a reaction at the same time as vaccine injections (Anaphylaxis a coincidence?? My airways closed up withing minutes of receiving my vaccines! I developed chronic asthma after that doctor visit when I was 8 years old!) nor did he want to hear any of the " false information " I had dug up on the subject. I RAN out of that office clutching my child, and never went back. It was then and there that I decided my child was better off in the hands of the chiropractor we had been taking him to since birth, and that my child just wouldn't attend any well-baby checkups, period. I'll tell you what I did about something similar--I must have been driven temporarily mad to do this but anyway--there is a place nearby that had an ad in the paper for a carnival/immuniztion clinic. There were clowns, a bouncy house, food and drink, etc. I saw red, and showed up with my then three kids wearing t-shirts I made up the night before. We signed in wearing our jackets and then took them off after declining their offer to vaccinate the kids. My shirt had an outline of my cleavage, with " Nurse your child for the best shot, " one of the kids' shirts had the word " Vaccine " with a red circle and slash through it, the youngest's said on the back " I'm vaccine-free and you can't bribe me " and I forget the other one. The people there never spoke directly to me but hovered over us offering us hot dogs, etc. (probably trying to keep my mouth full so I couldn't talk). Amazingly because the event was pro-vaccine and because she didn't have to do that. I thought it was rather brave of her. And, I'm not so sure nurses aren't the enemy in some cases, sorry. I have had some of the rudest comments from nurses over my refusal to vaccinate, trained or not. If I was at all intimidated, I could see them wielding a tremendous influence over me as a new parent. But on the whole, there are far more nurses looking at this than doctors. Chiropractors, in most cases, are very aware of this and don't vaccinate their children. Also, at one school, the nurse was rather snotty---she who has one anorexic son and another ADHD, both on drugs for years. She was quite resistant to my suggestion that she include in her notices to parents about how " vaccines are required by law and I am required to enforce this " that the law allows for exemptions. It's down on the NM/Texas border close to El Paso, so anyone living in the El Paso area could take a peaceful but active stance like Winnie did. I wish I lived closer, I'd do it! Being 8.5 months pregnant and a 16 hour drive away though, my hubby wouldn't think of letting me go -- I tried to suggest a 2 day road trip.
