Knowledge of Health: A universal polypill

" ... It’s easy to see here, modern medicine is not interested in

prevention. Conventional medicine is a system that encourages a disease

care system, not keeping patients healthy.

So Dr. Undurti N Das, editor and chief of Lipids in Health & Disease,

suggests that omega-3 fish oils act as a “polypill.” Instead of taking six

medications, some which produce side effects, fish oil would reduce

homocysteine, control blood pressure, reduce the risk of blood clots,

favorably alter cholesterol, in a manner that is safer and less expensive

than a polypill. Dr. Das proposes fish oil pills in place of the polypill.

[Medical Hypotheses 70: 430-34, 2008] But will modern medicine adopt Dr.

Das’ idea any more than it did the polypill?

Modern medicine does not make treatment decisions based upon science nor

cost. While cholesterol-lowering statin drugs continue to be widely

prescribed, there is no decline in sudden cardiac death. Meanwhile, doctors

in Germany point to a 90% decline in sudden cardiac death when omega-3

concentration in red blood cells exceeds 8% compared to the usual 4% or

less, the level found in most adults. [MMW Fortschr Medicine 149: 97-101,

2007] No such comparative decline in mortality can be attributed to higher

blood concentrations of statin drugs.

So even when it’s a life-or-death issue, doctors will opt for what makes

them more money. This is the ethics of modern medicine. Whatever is

expedient and most profitable is what is practiced. Does the public fully

recognize this? They say they do ... "
