Guest guest
Judy, I hope I didn't upset anyone with my suggestion. I didn't know he made those comments and I certainly don't agree with them. However, I think the main focus has to be on exposure and if we wait for the "nice" people in the media to give us that exposure we will get nowhere they work for the networks which are under pressure to be nice to their sponsers(big pharma). Many people that dislike Bill Maher watch his show because it is thought provoking, there is no spin. I am under no illusion that he would even be "helping us with this fight" but he may provide us with a forum to get the message out to people that wouldn't otherwise hear it. He may be an ass but he gets high powered people on the show ie.senators, congressmen, jounalists. I don't know that his views are because he is an evil person or because he is uneducated about developmental disabilities. Besides, we all know people who think like that. The best way to educate is not to avoid them. I know that Imus has said things in his radio carreer that would be offensive to alot of us but he has given us more exposure than any of those nice upstanding network guys and for that I will always be grateful. Just something to think about, judyhope2004 <judyhope@...> wrote: , after Mr. Maher's 2001 comments on his former show, Politically Incorrect, I'm not sure he's exactly the type of guy we want helping us with this fight. Guest guest
, I still think asking Bill Maher to have on his show is an excellent idea. The man is an ass, no doubt about it. But I agree we cannot always pick and choose only the " nice " people to participate in this fight. They are too busy keeping their jobs. I emailed him already. Hopefully HBO isn't too scared of the pharmas to do this. > , after Mr. Maher's 2001 comments on his former show, > Politically Incorrect, I'm not sure he's exactly the type of guy we > want helping us with this fight. Guest guest
I don't know if this has been brought up already, since I'm reading this mid-thread, but I do recall Maher doing a show when the flu vaccine shortage was going on. He had somebody on (maybe from the CDC?) and he really laid into her. He thinks we are over-vaccinated and our immune systems are suppressed, that we should let our bodies do what they were made to do. I must say, I was pretty impressed. Just thought I would throw that out there! Guest guest
Maher also had Ralph Nader on last session and they were discussing the flu vaccine shortage. Nader asked Maher if he was going to get his flu vaccine and Maher replied, "it's the vaccine that will kill you". Guest guest
Hi . Absolutely no offence taken! I just wanted to point out that he's an idiot. If he tackles this mercury issue, has Kirby on his show, gives us parents a fair and unbiased chance to speak, he'll certainly (partially at least) redeem himself. From what Mr. Kirby is saying, though, he too is ignoring this story. Spineless. As well as insensitive and cruel. It was easy to pick on the defenseless but it's not so easy standing up to defend them... Guest guest
Bill Maher compared autistic children to dogs a few years back on his show. I was a diehard Maher fan till I saw this episode.... IS this someone we should really be looking to align with in our cause? Guest guest
We should absolutely support Bill Maher, over the years Bill Maher has said many things I have found insulting, bigotted, boorish, ignorant, in bad taste, you name it. That's what he is paid to do, as long as a sufficient percentage of the things he says are " funny " . But he is expressing opinions many on this board would love to hear on national television. And beyond questioning mercury, he questions the whole vaccination and allopathic paradigm. He just got important information and opinions onto Larry King, and Maher could do it elswhere. This is great. How many people with access to the corporate broadcast media are doing this? Imus and now Maher. We should be thanking him and encouraging him. Guest guest
I agree . I don't quite remember the context of Maher's comment about children with autism, but I would also like to see that as well if possible. Ellen do you remember when that was by any chance? Too in an essence we have to seek out folks that are already doing this in the context not connected with ASD as well because it is very important. Folks think we are off our rockers, the ASD and mercury connection does not exist, so having folks like this bring it into perspective from outside that viewpoint also could assist overall. But someone will have to speak to him about that comment and too about what is transpiring now with ASD. Guest guest
Perhaps Bill Maher could get a better understanding of kids with autism, if enough of you contacted him and informed him of your thoughts about his comments. I believe someone here wrote that he has no children, so it is likely that he has no idea about how we feel about our kids, despite their "disabilities", and about the improvements many can make with various interventions and therapies, etc. If he were to become informed that our kids' difficulties may have been caused by vaccine ingredients and/or other sources of heavy metals, the very things he seems to be against, perhaps he would not be comparing kids with autism to dogs. Let's not forget the hot water Dr. Boyd Haley landed in, when he referred to autism as "mad child disease". Most of us who know him, his work, and his opinions well enough, were not offended by this comment. However, there were others who interpreted his comments in a different manner, and put a whole different spin on what he said and made it appear like he was referring in a derogatory manner to children who have been diagnosed with autism. I know nothing about Bill Maher. I don't believe that I have ever seen him on TV, so I cannot even imagine what his intentions may have been with regards to his comments about children with autism or other disabilities. However, if some of you make an attempt to enlighten/educate him about his apparent misconceptions, perhaps he will not make such dumb/misguided (I don't even know what to call them...) statements in the future. If some of you can help him see how his beliefs about vaccines and allopathic medicine relate to the challenges children diagnosed with neurological disorders face, perhaps you will have made some headway and given him more material to work with, at the same time. It seems to me that Bill Maher may not be making the connection between his beliefs about vaccines and signs of neurological disorders. Maybe with a bit of help, he will be able to make this connection. However, if after your input, he still cannot make this connection or see the connection for himself, perhaps he is indeed not the best person to align for this cause. However, I am hoping that he will "see the light". AasaEllen Sweeney <esweeney22@...> wrote: Bill Maher compared autistic children to dogs a few years back on his show. Guest guest
Carolyn.....his comments were made about 4 years or so ago. I was an avid Maher fan and I thought he was funny, but when he said this, it crossed the all too personal line for me and I only watched his show once after that night......I was involved in Message board fights for over a week but was victoriuos when he issued an on-air apology for his comments about a week later on his show.....it was " canned apology " ....the network who got alot of flack from disability org's made him do it....just the ignorance that was on those boards too.......it was horrible.....these people called my son names that I dont even want to mention here......I know I cant blame Maher for those comments but they are his " fans " ...... I understand your point of view .......being funny is what he is paid to do...But who is to say anyone will listen to what he says about mercury and autism? They may think its just another outlandish comment made by the " comedian Bill Maher " ..... My whole issue with Maher is that his irrational, ignorant, boorish, bigotted things he says will be projected on us as a group who is aligning themselves with him....his comments have been outlandish and bordering on rude and insensitive, based more so on his own ignorance than actual fact.....I mean comparing autistics and " retarded children " to dogs...then having the nerve to tell someone whom didnt agree with him from the audience that said she never thought of her nephew whom is mentally retarded as a dog that maybe she should do so....DISGUSTING!!! I support Imus wholeheartedly but Bill Maher, I dont think I could....I think before we get too desparate and align ourselves with someone like him, we should think twice.....he may do more to harm the cause with his big mouth than to help it.... Guest guest
Thanks Kim and , It was a fun night. There was another little bonus, I asked the girl next to me for the time and we started chatting. She’s an aide for a state congressman on the cape. Told her Bush was going to veto the appropriations bill Weldon secured. So she needed to make sure her boss votes for Garrett Bradley’s mercury removal bill for MA when it comes up. She says she on it. I was the only one asking for a show, > everyone else wanted pictures and autographs. I said " Bill will you PLEASE > do another show on autism and mercury and vaccines?? " He said yes, he'll > work on it, important (obviously quite a bit of partying went on in the > green room for the half hour we waited). I needed to get his attention a > little more considering the post show " state " he was in. I said " I am a > mother of a child who regressed into autism because of his vaccines and you > are the only one with the balls enough to report it, we need you! " Everyone > cheered at that since we were talking about the size of his balls. I was > pretty psyched to at least speak to him, however not sure he's going to > remember in the AM. Hopefully the full boob shot and complimenting his > balls was enough to bring about some more coverage!! - > > PS It was an awesome show! >
