Guest guest
, this is just about the saddest thing I have ever seen! What are the symptoms of depression in a child under the age of 1? I already had a suspicion that most psychiatrists were nuts – now, I know it! (my apologies to any sane psychiatrists who happen to be on this list…) From: AVN [mailto:AVN ] On Behalf Of Mac Sent: Friday, September 21, 2007 6:39 AM AVN Subject: [AVN] Anti-Despressants for babies Interesting reporting by the NZ Herald, Sept 10 ( ston, health reporter) in New Zealand during year 2004-2005, children were prescribed SSRI's (selective sero-tonin re-uptake inhibitors = anti-depressants) in the following quantities; 4728 prescriptions for children under 10 768 prescriptions for children 1 year old 453 prescriptions for children under 1 year old Emeritus Professor Werry, a child psychiatrist, said that " as far as we know " giving SSRI's to babies would not harm them, " but one doesn't like to give growing and developing kids medications that affect basic bio-cyclic processes because it just doesn't seem like a good idea unless the kid is really in severe difficulty " . The youngest child he had prescribed one to was a boy with autism aged 8 or 9, but that was " very exceptional " . During the reporter's investigation, Pharmac said they would look to see which doctors had prescribed them to children and Medsafe did not return NZ Herald calls. ------ Commonly reported side-effects of the SSRI's fluoxetine and paroxetine include diarrohea, insomnia, sleepiness and tremors. ----- We may be appalled by this but as parents we should also be outraged by the medical profession's behaviour. Reminds me of a bad movie. Is this happening elsewhere ? Could this be a cause of the soaring rates of autism and cancer ? I guess the medical authority think not. . __________________________________________________________ Sick of deleting your inbox? 7 Mail has free unlimited storage.
