Guest guest
HOW? Thursday, 24 November 2011 Hey, I think I smell a turkey in the oven. Oh wait, that's right, it's Thanksgiving Day! Yes, this is America's holiday where we gather, spend time with family and friends and, generally, overeat! I used to be one of those gobble, gobble, gobble overeaters on Thanksgiving Day. And yes, I used to be one of those gobble, gobble, gobble overeaters on Thanksgiving Day, just like so many other Americans. But, thank goodness, that's all changed for me. Today I view food differently from when I was younger. And bottom line is, that's what you've to do now, too. I've received thousands of e-mails from people all over the country asking the same question: , how do I stay on program on Thanksgiving Day? Good question, huh? Well yes, it's a little tough watching what you eat on Thanksgiving Day but...it's not impossible. I know, you'll be having dinner at your place, a family member or friend's house or you may be enjoying Thanksgiving dinner at a local restaurant. But where ever you are, there you'll be, sitting at a table laid out with food temptations from end-to-end. Oh my, what's a person working to lose weight to do? People love to serve those frozen dinner rolls or croissants on this special day. But have you ever read the labels on some of those frozen rolls products? You'd be shocked to see how many calories and fat grams there are in just one of those innocent-looking pieces of bread. And of course, how many people do you know who stop at eating just one of them, huh? And hey, we haven't even talked about the butter people spread on them! But those dinner rolls are only the beginning. There'll be appetizers, salads loaded with dressing, and all of the other incredible dishes served only on this special day. Goodness, there'll also be appetizers, salads loaded with dressing, and all of the incredible dishes served only on this special day. You know which ones I'm talking about. Turkey & dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and, of course, the green bean casserole. Who can resist that dish, made with cream of mushroom soup and those tasty French's Fried Onions? I mean, people who don't even like green beans like this dish. Hey, what's not to like? The taste of that creamy soup and those greasy fried onions take over the taste of everything else! LOL. (Hmmm, I wonder how many grams of fat and sodium are in that dish?) And oh yeah, you've gotta "save room" for dessert, right? But, truth is, a lot of people are gonna have dessert whether there's "room" in their stomachs or not! Let's see, will it be apple, pumpkin or pecan pie? Wait, I think I'll have it ala mode. (Oh, my!) Okay, everybody, before you dig into that Thanksgiving feast today, I want you to remember something. For every 3,500 calories you overeat, you're gonna gain a pound. Do the math, an additional 7,000 calories and you'll put another two pounds on your body. So the question is, how can you stay on program today when all of those rich, fattening foods know your first and last name? Well, you've got to plan your entire day...and not just your Thanksgiving meal. You have the same number of calories to eat today as you had yesterday, when it wasn't Thanksgiving. Remember, you have the same number of calories to eat today, (if you want to stay on program), as you had yesterday, when it wasn't Thanksgiving. This morning, you should have a lighter breakfast, maybe saving some of the starch and fat windows on your FoodMover for the dinner you'll be having later. If you're gonna have stuffing then skip the rolls. Opt for a plain baked sweet potato instead of the more fattening mashed potatoes with butter and gravy. Select foods for your plate that aren't rich in cream, loaded with salt and fat or high in calories. As for desert, have just a small piece of pie or cake and enjoy every mouthful. And oh, one more thing, you don't need seconds because you are, after all...only one person. Have a plan ready for today, okay? And after dinner, push yourself back from the table, have a good stretch then take your dog for a nice long walk around the neighborhood. Don't have a dog? Well, offer to take one of your neighbor's dog for a walk. My point is, try to get a little exercise in after dinner. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, your families, friends and your pets!
