NO PAIN, NO

GAIN?

If you were around back in the early 80's,

you may be familiar with the no pain, no gain mantra.

It's meaning was this: Unless your body was

actually hurting when you

worked out, you weren't putting enough into your workout.

Hmmm, I don't know how wise that advice was back

then...or now!

I lifted free weights and

oh, boy...did I ever feel the pain with that form of

exercise.

Don't get me wrong. I know what they meant with that

little call to really workout...hard! When I first

got into working out, I tried all forms of exercise.

I lifted free weights, for one and oh, boy...did I

ever feel the pain with that form of exercise.

But that pain I felt was caused because, for most

of my life, I'd never really used my muscles for real exercise.

That is, unless you count the "fork lifts" I used to

get those buttered mashed potatoes and gravy into my

mouth. LOL.

Because I hadn't used my muscles enough, that

"pain" was real because my body just wasn't used to

it. But the more I lifted weights, the less pain I

felt as my body adjusted to really putting these

muscles of mine to work.

The same is true for aerobics. Some of the people who

join me for the first time working out at Slimmons

talk about how they really "felt" their workouts after

they got home. But you know what? The next morning,

they woke up feeling better and more alive than ever.

Even better, they wanted more of that good

strong & alive feeling working out gave them. And

oh yes, they joined us for lots more workouts at

Slimmons.

If exercise is relatively

new to you, pace

yourself and

build up to doing a more strenuous and vigorous

workout.

A couple of weeks ago, I talked about how, if you

really want to burn the calories when you workout,

then you really need to put your

all into those workouts. But if exercise is

relatively new to you, remember, you do have to pace

yourself and

build up to doing a more strenuous and vigorous

workout. Overdoing your workouts may turn you off,

making you more inclined to quit...and we certainly

don't want that!

Remember, too, you've got to mix-up your workouts.

That way, you won't end up getting bored from doing

the same old routine everyday. I've always advised

that you do three days a week of aerobics, three

days of toning and devote one day of the week to

walking. It's the perfect workout mix that'll give

your body maximum benefit.

When you workout, don't try

to make yourself hurt.

So please, when you workout, don't try to make

yourself hurt. If you overdo

it, then you could end up well, really hurting

yourself. Start out slowly and each day, challenge

yourself to work a little bit harder. As you do, your

body will get stronger and you'll discover that you're

able to do more with less pain and still get a better

looking body! You'll look better and feel better as

you see those pounds coming off.

And as you see the numbers on your scale going down,

you'll have a whole new mantra to

shout: No GAIN...NO PAIN!
