HABIT-FORMING

Sunday, 25 September 2011

Oh yes, just like everyone else, I've had

my share of bad habits. (Goodness knows where I got

them from.) And of course, my worst habit was the

relationship I had with food. Actually, it used to

be more like a

marriage!

Let me tell you, I never met a plate of French fries

I didn't like. I loved walking down to Woolworth's

on Canal Street in New Orleans to order a big juicy

burger. And get this, I'd ask for a seprate

plate of

fries on the side. (Yes, I was that bad.) And

there must have been a coupla hundred restaurants in

the French Quarter where you could get a po-boy

sandwich, just about 24/7. And every one of them,

of course, served French fries! Oh, I was

in Heaven!

My food addiction was a habit I simply had

to break.

When I was growing up, if you ever spotted little

Dicky strolling through the Quarter, chances

are he had something to eat in one hand and a bottle

of Coca-Cola in the other. (Remember those cute

little Coke bottles shaped like Marilyn Monroe? Oh,

they fit so perfectly in my hands!)

Well, my food addiction was a habit I simply had to

break. I realized it as my weight got more and more

out of control. Back then, I would go on-and-off

one diet after another. I'd do pretty good for a

few days but there were more days where

I'd end up being bad. Really, really bad. (Oh,

that nasty old food habit of mine!)

I truly was a lot less wise in those days. See, I

used to think I could lose weight by simply dieting

alone. But it wasn't until later in life when I

discovered that I was going to need one good habit. That

is, if I wanted to lose the weight once and for

all. And that good habit was to eat more kale. No,

I'm kidding. Seriously, the new good habit I needed

was...exercise!

At first, I fought the idea of making

exercise a part of my life.

Now at first, I fought the idea of making exercise a

regular part of my life. It just wasn't for me, or

so I thought. I felt I must have looked foolish

even attempting to exercise. And feared I might

trip, fall and hurt myself while trying. (Oh, the

silly roadblocks I threw in my path.) But I can

honestly say I've come a long way baby. That is,

since I shook hands with and made exercise my body's best

friend.

I get up early every morning and head right to my

gym. I get in there each morning to start my day

with an hour of exercise. Plus, every Tuesday

evening, Thursday evening and Saturday morning, I'm at my workout studio, Slimmons,

sweatin' my tush off with about 100 wonderful

friends who've come to take class with me. Do we

ever have fun!

Oh, what a change it's made in my life,

making exercise my new good habit.

Oh, what a change it's made in my life, making

exercise my new good habit. When I tell you I can't

live without it, believe me...I mean it! I need it,

too. That's right, I need my sweatin'

fix! I need to tone my muscles, do my cardio and

really stretch this body of mine...everyday.

Now I was thinking, maybe you're fearing

exercise...like I once did. But ya' know...what you

should really fear is not exercising!

I mean, think about all of the medical problems you

can end up with because you didn't make exercise a

part of your life. It's true, your body loves to

move and...your body needs to move!

Ahhh, exercise. It really is habit-forming!

As for me, I'll be moving this body of mine and

exercising everyday until the good Lord calls me to

Heaven where I can exercise with him. And hey, when

I get there, I really will be dancing

with the stars!

Love,
