ONE FOR THE ROAD

Friday, 09 December 2011

Here in Los Angeles, I've noticed several

commercials for alcohol and liquor stores lately. Oh

my, they're offering all kinds of holiday specials.

They've got deals where you buy one bottle of liquor

then get a second bottle of the same stuff at 50%

off. Such a deal, makes me almost want to stock up!

LOL. Okay, I'm only kidding.

I lived only a block from

world-famous Bourbon Street and I think they named it

"Bourbon" Street for a reason.

But seriously, being raised in New Orleans, I got used

to seeing a lot of people who were drunk. Remember, I

lived only a block from world-famous Bourbon Street

and I think they named it "Bourbon" Street for a

reason.

On my way to school, I had to walk past two bars every

morning. And get this, at 7:00AM, they'd already be

filled with customers. I actually knew some of the

people having their early morning cocktails and they'd

shout to me as I walked past, "Hey,

Dicky! I want you to learn a lot in school today!"

Well, after being raised around so many people who

loved to drink, I decided I never wanted to be a

drinker. (That is, unless they came out with a

chocolate mousse flavored vodka! LOL.)

I know the holiday parties have begun all across

America. And of course, a lot of those parties will

have complete bars set up where you can have yourself

a cocktail. But before you do, I want you to consider

a few things, okay?

One serving, (usually an ounce),

of any hard liquor contains about 100

calories.

One serving, (usually only an ounce), of any

hard liquor, like gin or whiskey, contains about 100

calories. And

let's be honest, who makes do with just one drink,

right? But with that shot of liquor, you've got to

add a mixer, anything from a soft drink to tonic water

or one of the more exotic holiday beverages that add even more calories. And

like I said, for most people, just one cocktail for

the evening is usually not enough.

Before you know it, some of them have belted down a

few of those cocktails and, as the evening progresses,

they'll end up having just one more for the road. But

wait, that's when it gets dangerous, (especially for

those of us who're working to lose weight). See,

those cocktails, for a fact, will make you less

inhibited. That means, the control you

normally have with your eating goes out the window and

you're much more likely to eat the things you know that you

shouldn't be eating. And...lots of them. Oh

my, those calories are really beginning to add up now,

aren't they?

Look, maybe you enjoy having a drink once in a while.

And if that's what you like, fine. Go ahead and have

yourself an occasional cocktail. But if you're

planning to drink at a party some evening, remember,

the calories in that alcohol do count toward

your daily calorie consumption. If you plan to drink

later, then you should make a calorie-cut at some

point during the day and save those calories to spend

on your evening cocktail.

Do not get behind the

wheel of a car to drive if you've been drinking.

And please, I want you to remember one very

important thing.

And that is, do

not get behind the wheel of a car to drive if you've

been drinking. Be sure there's always a

designated driver who'll

not be drinking that evening.

Hey, we don't need any more injuries or to suffer the

loss of even one life because somebody had to have...one

for the road.

Love,
