PANICKED?

Saturday, 10 December 2011

During the early years of my life, I had a

simply terrible relationship

with the scale. Back home in New Orleans, my mother

kept a scale in the bathroom. And I'm telling you,

sometimes I'd step on it and just about faint! If I didn't

like the numbers I saw, I'd jump off that scale

and say to myself out loud, "How could

I have gained five pounds so fast? I just don't

understand it!"

Today, I have a much

healthier relationship with my scale. I weigh myself

every morning at the same time.

After one of those shocking experiences, it might be a

couple of weeks before I had enough nerve to get back

on the scale again. Oh, I might think

about getting

on the scale to see what my weight was but...I

wouldn't.

But today, I have a much healthier relationship with

my scale. I weigh myself every morning at the same

time, 4:45AM. And I always make sure the battery in

my digital scale is working properly so I get an

accurate reading.

Now I know that some of you reading today's message

don't have such a good relationship with the scale

yourselves. And one of the reasons is that sometimes

you don't like what the scale "tells" you.

During the Monday night chat in my Clubhouse last

week, one of my Clubhouse members admitted that

she panics whenever she sees the numbers on her scale

go up. And it's doubly distressing

when she's been faithful with her eating program and

workouts. Her weight goes up two pounds and, in her

mind, it might as well have been 20 pounds!

Oh, her heart gets to racing, panic sets in and it

takes her another half-hour to calm down! And while

she's calming down, all she can do is think about what

she could have eaten lately that caused her weight to

shoot up two pounds so quickly.

Oh I know, it was only a two-pound weight-gain but

still, I know what this lady was going through. Years

ago, if I had a two-pound weight-gain, I'd have walked

out into the middle of the street in a foggy daze...oh,

my!

Our bodies weight sometimes

fluctuates a few pounds for any number of reasons.

But here's what I've learned over the years. Our

bodies weight sometimes fluctuates a few pounds for

any number of reasons. It could be anything from the volume of food we

eat, (not the calories), to how much water we drink to

how much we put into our workouts and sweat.

Look, if you're being faithful to your weight-loss

program and see a small weight-gain every now and

then, please...you should not panic! I mean, what

good does the panic do you anyway? By staying the

course, in time, your body will make a "course

correction" and you

will see

those numbers begin to move down on your scale again,

like you want!

So, are you feeling panicked about the numbers you saw

on your scale? Well, don't be!

The best thing to do is turn any panic you may have

over a minor weight-gain into the

determination you need to

keep fighting and reach for your weight-loss goal!

Love,
