Guest guest
TALKING YOURSELF...OUT OF IT! Tuesday, 24 May 2011 No matter where you turn, there'll be food tempations waiting for you. And, oh yes, they'll be demanding your attention always, for the rest of your life. Now the bottom line is that you can give in to those temptations or...you can talk yourself out of them. Let me give you a few examples. You're driving down the street and a big new billboard grabs your attention. (Gasp!) It's a giant photo of a hamburger, not with one slice of beef, or even two slices, mind you. This burger has three big-old beef patties. (Oh, my!) The picture of that burger is so lifelike, it feels like you can just eat it right off the billboard! LOL. Mmmm, that special mayoniase-based sauce is dripping off the sides and you see one slice of cheese after another tucked between each of the three beef patties. And, oh my, it's loaded with crispy slices of bacon, too! Is your mouth watering at the thought of stopping to get yourself one? NO! In fact, you begin having a little talk with yourself about why you shouldn't stop and have one of those burgers. That isn't a hamburger. It's an artery-clogging hunk of fast food that doesn't belong in my body! There's no way I should be having one of those. My cholestrol is already high and I can only imagine what eating one of them will do to my numbers! Just across the street from where you work, there's an authentic family-owned pizzeria. They specialize in gourmet pizza and make the best in town. As you leave work, you can smell those pizzas baking away in their special brick ovens. And oh-oh, temptation is getting the best of you. One day after work, as you take the first steps across the street to that pizzeria, it's almost as if you can already taste the pizza you're going to order. It'll have three kinds of meat, lots of gooey cheese and oh, that sauce of theirs...you can't wait! But wait...you must wait! That smart little voice in your head begins talking to you again! Do you know how many calories and fat grams will be in just one slice of that pizza? And come one, when have you or anyone else ever stopped at having just one slice of pizza, huh? And think about what those slices of pizza will do to your waistline? You're at the supermarket and on every aisle, it seems there's some new food they want you to sample! They have everything from those little mini-hot dogs, to a new ice cream flavor for you to taste. And oh my, they even have an oven on one of the aisles where they're baking up hot toll-house cookies for you to try. You overhear the lady serving up the cookies tell one customer, "Yes Mam, you can find then right over there with the other refridgerated desserts. All you have to do is slice and bake them!" Isn't it funny? Those little bite-size snacks they're offering may look innocent enough. But if you add up the calories from all of them, your little afternoon of grocery shopping could end up costing you enough calories for an entire meal! Sounds like it's time for another one of those little talks with yourself. Hey! Don't be sampling all of those foods! You've worked hard all week eating healthy and exercising. Don't you dare blow all of that effort because this supermarket is offering up these "Thumbelina" foods! 80 calories here, 100 calories there and, before you know it, you could "innocently" consume 1,000 calories! You've got another 45 pounds to lose and trying all of these foods is not going to help you get there! Hey, just like you, I face food temptations everyday, too. But...my willpower is stronger than my taste buds. And it feels good when you talk yourself out of those foods. I want you to practice having these little talks with yourself beginning today. And when you do, you'll end up being so proud of yourself...in a very big way! Love,
