Guest guest
MOUTHFEEL Wednesday, 09 March 2011 Do you ever look through the dictionary and discover new words? I love doing that. (I have a dictionary with large print, by the way. LOL.) Sometimes I'll choose a letter from the alphabet and look for a new word to help build my vocabulary. I did it with the letter "M" the other day and came across the most interesting word...MOUTHFEEL. My dictionary defined mouthfeel as the sensation a food gives your mouth when you're eating. And when a food gives you a good mouthfeel, you end up saying things to yourself life, Oh my goodness, this is just luscious! Or you might say, Wow, this is awesome! Or, I haven't tasted anything this good in a long time, I love it. I've just got to have some more! Food manufacturers love to create products for us that have a good mouthfeel. In fact, they spend millions of dollars to develop new snack foods that will leave us begging for more. They even have focus groups come in and taste-test the foods as they attempt to "hit the jackpot" with the latest snack food creation. And you know what happens when they come up with a real winner...many of us get hooked! I remember when I was doing fat-free snacks for Walmart. They would come to my house with samples of the new products. I was like a one-man focus group as I sampled the foods they'd brought with them. (Gee, I miss those days. LOL.) Ice cream companies are always looking for new flavor combinations, too. And oh how we love the creamy mouthfeel of just about any flavor ice cream, right? But when Ben & Jerry come up with an exotic new flavor combination, we just can't wait to try it. The same goes for when one of the big food companies is developing new cookies or candy bars. Oh, they try different combinations of nuts, caramel, milk chocolate and nougat, searching for that perfect mouthfeel we just can't say no to. And after not saying no the first time, they're hoping we'll go back for more! And we love those salty snack too, don't we? There used to be only a few but now the grocery stores are lined with aisle-after-aisle of salty snack foods. Seems we Americans can't get enough...of that salty stuff! And okay, what happens when you get addicted to these foods and keep them in your house. Well, I'm sorry to say, they end up going right smack into your mouth for your mouthfeel fix. Oh, no! And the next time you "see" those foods, you know where you'll see them, don't you? Well, in the numbers on your scale...that's where. You'll end up gaining weight! In order to lose weight, you have to enjoy the mouthfeel of the freshest and healthiest foods you can put into your body. For instance, I love the mouthfeel of salads. I love the crunch of all those colorful vegetables as I munch on them. Last night, I made a salad with romaine lettuce, shredded purple cabbage, cherry tomatoes, carrot slices and celery. I made a dressing of olive oil and balsamic vinegar and I have to tell you, my taste buds were very happy. A couple of days ago, I made a parfait of nonfat yogurt, fresh fruits and granola. I couldn't stop eating it. I just loved the mouthfeel of that creamy yogurt and crunchy granola. Today, you should go through your kitchen and take a look at all off the products you have there that give you a good mouthfeel. But...get rid of those foods that are high in calories and fat. I mean, while they may make your mouth feel good, how will they make your body feel when you gain more weight, huh? I want you eating those healthy foods that will make your mouth "feel good" while making your hips...look good! Love,
