Guest guest
"E" Thursday, 24 February 2011 When people write, they tell me lots of personal stories about their lives. I'm talking about things they might not tell other members of their families, even their spouses. I've been around for a long time and they've really come to trust me...and my opinion. I'm truly honored by that. Well, let me tell you this little story a lady named Beverly shared with me. Beverly had gotten rid of her scale a very long time ago. Seems she was just tired of being frustrated by the numbers she saw on her scale. Since she got rid of it, there has not been a scale in her bathroom and hey, Beverly was just fine with that. Yep, she was okay not living with a scale and...in denial! As the months passed, not weighing herself, Beverly noticed that she was buying her clothes in larger sizes and her old clothes were getting increasingly tight on her. But the denial was still there and the reason why she was buying larger sizes didn't really click in her mind. (See? Denial is a dangerous thing.) Well, one holiday weekend, Beverly was visiting her parents. And it just so happened, her folks did keep a scale in their bathroom. When Beverly visited the bathroom during her visit, there it was...the scale. (Oh, no!) But curious about her weight, Beverly dared herself to get on. (Hey, who would know?) So, after removing her shoes, she closed her eyes, stood on the scale and even said a little prayer, "Oh, God, please let me be ready for the numbers I see when I open my eyes." And with her prayer said, Beverly opened her eyes, looked down at the scale and saw...NO numbers. What she did see was a big flashing red..."E." And no, that "E" was not for "excellent," it stood for ERROR! See, her parent's scale apparently only went to 300 pounds. And if you put more weight than that on the scale, you'd get the flashing letter "E." Still standing on the scale, with that big-old "E" flashing in her face, Beverly was in a state of shock and panic. The "E" was what she got for her years of denial. She just couldn't believe that she weighed over 300 pounds. But now...she couldn't, well...deny it. Even though she was devastated, Beverly began thinking seriously about losing the weight. That "E" had been her wake-up call. And the next time she was at the mall, the first thing she bought was a brand new scale. Beverly then went to work, losing the weight she needed to lose! And so far, she's lost 26 pounds on her road to recovery. And she admits, seeing those numbers going down on her new scale felt so much better than seeing that big-old "E." I know some of you have given away or tossed out your scales. Or you may be weighing yourselves on a rather old scale. Well, I think it's about time you invested in a new one so you can keep an accurate record of your weight. You may decide to check your weight every week or every other week, just whatever works best for you. Only thing is, please, don't get obsessive or compulsive with how often you weigh yourself. I did that for years. In fact, I used to weigh myself three or four times a day! (I'm not kidding.) I'd get on the scale soon as I got out of bed, have breakfast then weigh myself again. But the sickest thing I'd do is weigh myself before I went out to dinner then weigh myself again soon as I got back home. Of course, I'd see a one or two pound weight "gain" and be so upset that I'd skip breakfast the next morning! But, thank goodness, that little weigh-in disorder from my past is no more. Now, I want you to remember, the numbers on your scale are there to guide you, not drive you...nuts! Love,
Guest guest
I suppose we all have your love and hate affair with the scale, I know I have. I never obsessed over it, I never weighed more than once a day when I have it available. I have even tossed the scale out for years at a time. This time around, I feel the scale is important, it does give me input about what is going on in my body. I think the years I went through rejecting diet mentality, I was in denial and it was just a reaction against the crazy things I did to lose weight and gain weight. There has to be a balance in everything, including the scale. While women’s body fluids will fluctuate, the scale doesn’t lie. I am working on matching up what I think is going on in my body through paying attention and what the scale reads. At the maintenance level, I want to be able to tell when I feel I gaining or a change is happening. Just some thoughts.
