Guest guest
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION... Wednesday, 12 October 2011 Is worth a pound of cure! I know you're all familiar with that saying, aren't you? Well, for what I'm going to discuss with you today, I want those words at the top of your mind. See, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the key word here is...aware. In order to fight this disease, the more you know about it, the better shape you'll be in to fight and beat it. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. after skin cancer. Did you know that breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. after skin cancer? An estimated 200,00 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. That's nearly one quarter of a million new cases. But while this disease claims thousands of lives each year, the good news is that today, there are over 2,500,000 breast cancer survivors living in the United States. I like that word living because it means these women were able to beat the disease! Throughout my life, I've known women who were diagnosed with breast cancer. In fact, I'm sad to say that I've lost some of these ladies to breast cancer. But thankfully, I also know lots of women who were diagnosed with breast cancer and who're now among the millions of survivors I told you about. I've had several students at Slimmons who've fought breast cancer and won! I've had several students at Slimmons who've fought breast cancer and won! Some of them have had single or even double mastectomies followed my chemotherapy and radiation treatment. But there they are in class, working out hard and looking better than ever. Now that makes me smile! I must tell you about a very special lady I admire so very much. She was my producer on The Show back in the 80's and her name is Noreen. She beat breast cancer on more than one occasion and she's still going strong today. In fact, she's even set up her own foundation to help other women beat this disease. Noreen travels the world educating women on the importance of taking good care of their health and advises them, beginning at age 40, to see their doctors for an annual mammogram. She really is one amazing woman, that Noreen! Be aware! I just know that one day, working together and being smart, we're going to help that list of 2.5 million breast cancer survivors grow even longer. But I like I said before, you need to be aware!
