Guest guest
I'VE GOT THE MUSIC IN ME! Sunday, 03 April 2011 Oh, I was born with a song in my heart. I was raised in a house where both my parents sang. We had record players in three rooms of our home. When my parents cooked, they listened to music. When we sat down for dinner, we listened to music. Sometimes my father would turn the TV off and turn the record player on instead. We all loved it as we sat, sorta just hanging out, talking and listening to the music together. As you know, I'm from New Orleans and you should also know that music is woven into our city's history. My family lived only a short distance from world-famous Preservation Hall. There, they played that wonderful New Orleans jazz all night long. I could hear the jazz playing in the background at Preservation Hall and it would actually help me fall asleep. I'm sure most of you have an iPod. And tell me, how many of you listen to music when you're driving? I know I do. And I'm sure that, just like me, you've got to have your musical fix everyday. I wake up to music. I have lots of CDs and my wonderful assistant, Michele, has made lots of custom CDs with all of my favorite music on them. Would you like to know a few of the songs I listened to this morning? Okay, let me tell you. Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen is one of my faves. Every time I hear that song, I picture myself on a motorcycle and yes, Bruce is there, too. We're both singing Born To Run as we race down some deserted, far-away California highway on our shiny motorcyles! Then of course there's Petula singing another one of my all time favorites, Downtown. I love that song. I even had the honor of having Ms. on The Show with me back in the early 80's. And when she was on, you know I just had to sing Downtown to her. LOL! And oh yeah, Singin' in the Rain by Gene . My parents took me to see the movie of the same name when I was a kid. I fell in love with the song and have been in love with it ever since. When I moved to Los Angeles, I was in a grocery store once and who did I see while I was there? Mr. Gene , himself...WOW! All I could do was kneel before him, take his hand, kiss it and whistle just a little bit of Singin' In The Rain. Oh, he just laughed...what a nice man! And don't you just love Cyndi Lauper? I've never met her but I know that someday I will. She really sings from her heart and soul, don't you agree? My favorite song of hers, the one everyone knows her for is from the 80's. What is it? Oh, come on, you know...Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! And what a fun song it was, too! This morning, I was Dancing On The Ceiling with Lionel Richie. But wait, I'm not done! Do you remember Juice Newton? She sang a beautiful love ballad called Angel In The Morning. But do you remember her other big hit? It was Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me. I know you have a list of songs you adore and that's good. See, music is a great stress-reliever. And of course, it's the perfect companion for your workouts or to listen to when taking a long walk. And oh yeah, just like my parents, I still listen to music when I'm in the kitchen cooking. You can go to iTunes and listen to some of your favorite songss and they're not very expensive to purchase there, either. I have to admit, I've become pretty much an iTune junkie! You don't even want to know how many songs I've purchased from them. LOL! Every Saturday at Slimmons, for our Sweatin' classes, I put together a collection of music with the same theme. Yesterday, it was all big hits from Motown. Next Saturday, we'll be working out to today's hits by modern artists like Katy , J.Lo and Britney. Hey, I've got an idea. Why dontcha put a little music in YOU today. I promise, it'll put you in a better and more positive mood on this beautiful Sunday!
