Guest guest
THE EYES HAVE IT! Saturday, 02 April 2011 Today we're going to talk about those sparkling eyes of yours. And yes, they do sparkle, as if they were made of glass. Your eyes are like your body's headlights. They let you see everything in the world around you. I'm talking everything from a beautiful rainbow after a rainfall, to the blooms in a field of daisies to a flock of birds streaking across the sky. Not only that, when you're happy, your eyes light up. And when you're sad, the tears flow from those telling eyes of yours. From the moment you wake up in the morning, thanks to your eyes, you get to see a brand new day on this earth. And those eyes of yours work all day long, allowing you to see everything in your life until you close them at night, preparing for a good night's sleep. Your eyes are like the camera in your cell phone, only much better. You see everything in 3-D without having to wear those special glasses they give you at the movies. Once you see something, that picture is sent by your eyes to your brain so you can take in whatever it is you're observing. Now I know you don't usually think of your eyesight in this much detail. In fact, those of us blessed with the gift of vision often take our sight for granted. Well today, I want you to consider your eyes and the truly miraculous duty they perform for you. I wonder how many of you visit an optometrist regularly? I go every year to see mine, Dr. "K." He's been taking good care of my eyes since 1986. For the past nine years, I've had to use prescription reading glasses. And, thanks to them, I can enjoy all of my novels, without squinting! LOL. When I go to have my eyes checked by Dr. K., I have to laugh every time he puts that eye chart up for me to read. You know how it is, with the big numbers and letters on top that grow gradually smaller toward the lower end of the chart. The last group of letters are so tiny that when Dr. K. tells me to read them, I look at him and say, "Hey Doc, they're too small. YOU read 'em!" LOL. Many things can happen to your vision, especially as you get older, so I don't want any of you ever taking your eyesight for granted. If you haven't had your eyes checked in more than two years then please, you need to make an appointment with an optometrist to have them examined as soon as possible. Later in life, a lot of people suffer with glaucoma, cataracts or other diseases that can affect the eyes. That's why you need a pair of optometrist's eyes to take a look at your eyes on a regular schedule. And by the way, did you know that eating healthy can help keep your eyes healthy? It's true! Your eyes love antioxidants, which includes Vitamins A, C & E. And you know where to get those antioxidants, don't you? You get them from bright-colored fruits and vegetables like blueberries, spinach and carrots. Carrots, by the way, are rich in beta-carotene. Speaking of beta-carotene, it's converted by the body into Vitamin A which helps keep your eye's retinas functioning properly. Your retina captures light rays, transmits the signal to your brain then turns the light into the images you see. Vitamin C helps keep your eyes beautiful and clear. And Vitamin E is especially good at helping to prevent cataracts. By the way, let me tell you what cataracts are. It's a cloudy, painless area in the eye that keeps your retina from doing its job. The older you get, the more likely you are to develop cataracts. And that's one more important reason to get those eyes of yours checked regularly. I know, I push fruits and vegetables a lot. But I do it for a reason. After reading this message, you should have another idea why eating those fruits and veggies is so important for your overall health...including your eyesight! Right now in my kitchen, I have oranges, strawberries yams, green beans, broccoli and a number of whole grain products. My eyes love them. I mean, look at me, (with those beautiful eyes of yours). I'm telling you, I can see perfectly...unless the print is really small! Love,
