Guest guest
STEP RIGHT UP! Wednesday, 06 October 2010 From my very first cruise, I made a rule that all of my cruisers, (who were able), had to take the stairs from one deck of the ship to the next. Of course, there was a reason for my stair-climbing orders. See, climbing stairs is such a great exercise. Hey, your heart loves the stairs, your lung loves them and climbing the stairs helps build your stamina. Well, last week on the cruise, one of my cruisers told a story that gave us all a good chuckle. She was taking the stairs up to her cabin, which was three flights up from where she started. As she was going up the stairs, one of the ship's crew members noticed her going up and stopped her. The crew member asked, "Why is it every time I see you, you're taking the stairs instead of using the elevator? It's right there, you' know." My cruiser said to her, "Oh, I'm on the ship with for his Cruise To Lose and he wants us to always take the stairs. I do and I love it!" Well, that crew member complimented my cruiser on how good she looked and that it looked like taking those stairs was really paying off for her. The two of them giggled but that crew member's compliment stuck with my cruiser all day! Now let me tell you, I'm a stairs man! I mean it, I just love climbing stairs. In many of the hotels I stay in, I'm often up and down the stairs from floor-to-floor getting in a little extra exercise as I do. I was so proud of my cruisers for staying active and taking the stairs as often as they could. And believe me, those big Carnival ships have a lot of decks and so...a lot of stairs. But it was my cruisers you spotted taking the stairs more often than the other passengers on the ship. (See why I was so proud of them?) Many of my cruisers have already E-mailed to tell me how much weight they lost during Cruise To Lose week. Six pounds, eight pounds...one lady, who had a great deal of weight to lose starting out, lost 13 pounds during our week at sea. Hey, how great is that? Walking up and down those stairs burned a lot of calories for my cruisers last week. As a matter of fact, a person weighing about 200 pounds can burn up to 15 calories a minute taking the stairs. Now, multiply that by the number of minutes my cruisers spent on those stairs everyday last week and you can see, they burned a lot of extra calories! (All of that stair-climbing probably added up to another Sweatin' & Tonin' class for them! LOL.) So are you the kind of person who always takes the elevators? Or are you like me...a stair person? The next time you're at the mall, or anyplace that has stairs to climb, put your hands on the railing and...step right up. Now if you haven't climbed the stairs in a long time, I wouldn't start out trying to go up ten flights. I would just go up one floor then walk right back down. And the next day, I'd do the same. After a couple of weeks of doing that, you'll be able to do two floors. And within a year, why, you'll be able to visit New York City and take those 102 flights of stairs all the way to the top of the Empire State Building! So...step up and you'll see those pounds...go down! Love,
