Sept 16, 2010 They say once you get a tattoo that it becomes addicting. Perhaps it is true, because I added to my Hawaiian turtle within days of getting home. I love getting inked. I wanted to add a few new items so that there was a S shape swirling around my arm, reminiscent of the movement of the sea. The turtle is so large that I cannot see him whole, only parts of him at a time. I wanted to have something more feminine added, I had first thought of a mermaid chasing the turtle. I talked with an artist and he said I didn’t have enough arm for the mermaid to be even close to being in proportion, plus she would have to wrap around my arm as the turtle. The designs I was finding were all so sexualized, I wasn’t in the mood for a big busted mermaid with a come hither look in her eyes. So I opted for the flowers that were in my lei my daughter put around my neck when I arrived in Hawaii. So the artist came up with a set of two, which he placed above and below the turtle: This is taken right after the inking, so it is raised and darker than it will be when it starts to heal and gives up some of the ink. I loved the flowers, it now reminds me of those flowers and gives me something sweet to look at. The set on top of the turtle are these in a reversed pattern. But as much as I loved the flowers, I was missing my mermaid. I had seen one in one of the plates of art at the shop and it had caught my eye. I decided to go back and ask about the mermaid. Well, it didn’t take much to convince me to have it done, so now my S pattern is complete, I have a turtle to remind me of when I swam in the ocean with them, the flowers my daughter gave me and my lifelong love of mermaids. This mermaid is in a primitive tribal form and is not meant to compete with the splendid turtle, she is just about 3 inches long: I just love her. I love the whimsical tail. Now the turtle is chasing the mermaid! So here is how my left arm now looks: The ink is still dark on the flowers and mermaid until they are healed. They will soon lighten up and match the turtle, in about 3 weeks or so. My secret wild side is showing! lol --
