[The Little Bowl] Turn Off the Heat!

Yesterday we sat all day at a truck stop in Texas. Being past mid October means nothing here, it got to 97 degrees outside and baked the truck to a much higher temp. We melted and suffered. The truck being black absorbed the heat, and my upper bunk became an oven. We will have to get a small fan the next time we are at Walmart to circulate the heat up there. The vents for the air-conditioning are down at mattress level, so all I could do was lay down and face the vent to get partial relief. Imagine having to lay most of the day. Crabbiness happens, I tell ya. The lower bunk is enclosed so the air conditioning cycles better there, so at least husband was comfortable.. When the truck is shut off then the APU takes over and runs the air-conditioning in back, but there is no air-conditioning in the front of the truck where the passenger seats are. So eating a meal or sitting in our seats is like sitting in an oven. We can't win and this just is a miserable experience all around to have to sit out a day in the high temps. Once the sun went down and the metal of the truck roof cooled off, the air conditioner was able to cool the interior down, but at dinner time it was still hot and was it miserable for my husband to have to sit up front while I sat at on his bunk to cook. He was drenched in sweat and I really felt bad for him. Today we are driving again, but it is a load to pick up here in Texas by the Gulf and taking pineapples to Missouri. It a crummy delivery at 1 am, which means we won’t get out of there until 3-5 am which means daytime sleeping the next day. Another day of misery in the heat. I hope we soon get out of the heat belt and up north some where. My cooking is now pretty routine, since we were sitting, I cooked the sausages in the skillet again last night, oh they are just so good that way! It’s a treat for us to have little luxuries outside the normal routine. I am so pleased that I can also heat up veggies in the microwave, or precook the potatoes, to lessen cooking times….before everything had to go in the lunchbox ovens. So I am definitely grateful for the APU. Here, the onions are cooked, I am now starting the sausages, they will brown and plump up so nicely. I am so glad we found these chicken sausages, they are so tasty and keep well. I haven’t had any major hunger yet, which is surprising me a bit, it seemed for most of my dieting on the truck last year was one long hunger strike. I was higher in my carb intake, I suspect that was the cause, but I was also heavier and my calories were so low most of the time. So far, the 9 days back on the truck, my average is 1265 calories and 36 net carbs. I don’t want to mess with this number until I hit a long stall. I don’t want to get worked up about it, right now I feel good and I can feel a huge difference between now and how I felt in September. --
