Guest guest
WHAT'S ON THE GRILL? Monday, 06 September 2010 In 1884, congress established the holiday we celebrate today...Labor Day! And what exactly is Labor Day? Well, it's a day to honor all of America's workers. And I'm talking the millions and millions of workers in the good-old USA. There're so many kinds of workers doing their jobs to make our country great. There're the farmers and, my goodness, we know how hard they work, from morning to night, making sure those healthy farm-grown foods make it to our tables. There're the policemen and firemen who often risk their own lives making sure we're always safe. In the medical profession, there're nurses and doctors whose great mission it is to keep us healthy and to save lives. And in cities across America, large and small, there're factories filled with workers turning out everything from furniture to automobiles. (Maybe you work in one of them.) All of these millions of people work hard providing the goods and services we need everyday. From bank tellers to the salespeople at Walmart, to the attorneys and yes, to the waiters, (I used to be one), all of these workers play a role in our day-to-day lives. Yep, on this day, we pause to salute those people, you included, who help keep America humming. Hey, there would be no America without all of our hard work! Now, there is one downside to this holiday. See, many of those millions of workers, from coast-to-coast, will be attending cookouts today. Yep, what better way to celebrate our labors than to fire up those grills! There'll be steaks, burgers and hot dogs. There'll be potato salad, macaroni salad and cole slaw. And we've gotta include deserts for the occasion like banana cream pie, chocolate fudge cake and homemade cookies. There'll be all kinds of sodas, Diet Cokes, ice-cold cans of beer and pitchers of margaritas to cool everyone off. Millions of people will sit around the picnic table today laughing and talking as they chow down, enjoying what is the last big cookout of the summer. And many laborers will go home after those big cookouts to a couple pounds of...weight-gain. (There's the downside.) Then they'll have to "labor" by working out to burn the way-too-many calories they consumed on Labor Day! Hey, I want you and your family to really enjoy this day. You should be proud of yourself for working hard everyday. But I also want you to realize that you can celebrate without suffering a weight gain. Yes, you have to work hard at it and it's a little challenging. But I believe you can stay on program, on any holiday and still have yourself one great time. Say hello to your family from me and...Happy Labor Day! Love,
