IN MODERATION

Sunday, 12 September 2010

I was out in my garage yesterday

doing a little cleaning and found this box of

diet-books I'd used years ago when I did research for

my first bestseller, Never Say

Diet Book. I took a few of the books from the

box, brought them inside and sat at the butcher block

table in my kitchen and began reviewing them.

A doctor had written one of those diet-books and in

it, he talked about all of the foods you should never,

ever eat again. And he'd listed a lot of

foods. His list began with white flour, then white

sugar, white rice and oh, I'm telling you, his list

just went on and on! And I want to tell you

something, I tried that food program of his for just

two days but could not stay on it. It was

just too severe and restrictive for me. Talk

about punishment! To me, this doctor's diet

really was punishment.

Over the years, I've met people who tell me about the

foods they will never, ever eat again. And,

I have to say, some of them even sound a little angry

when they told me about their "forbidden"

foods...LOL. But you know what? When it came to my

own weight-loss and maintaining it, what's

really made the difference for me is...moderation.

By that, I mean eating healthy but, on a rare

occasion, allowing myself a little something that is

not so healthy.

Now of course, you must not have

those foods that you know are

fattening...every single day. No, no, no!

But once in a while, I believe it's just fine. See,

if someone tells me I can't ever have a

certain food again, I end up feeling extremely

deprived. Later on, I begin pouting and well, you

don't want to know the rest!

For instance, take desserts. You know I love

them! I was raised with having dessert at

dinnertime, growing up on 926 St. Louis Street in New

Orleans. Sometimes we'd have pastries from this fancy

bakery shop on Royal Street. Or we'd each have a bowl

of ice cream with some warm, homemade cookies. Once a

week, my father would make his famously delicious

bread pudding! (To this day, bread pudding is a very

popular dessert in New Orleans.) And, thanks to

having a big dessert every night with dinner when I

was a kid, of course...I began putting on weight.

Fast forward to 2010 and I still love my desserts.

There's a famous deli on Sunset Boulevard here in Los

Angeles called Greenblatt's. (It's been

there for years.) And they make the one most

incredible dessert you've ever had

anywhere. What is it? It's their pecan pie.

And last night, I had one-half of one

slice. I closed my eyes as I put each morsel into my

mouth. It took me twenty minutes to consume the 300

calories in that half-slice and it was so-o-o-o

good! But you'll note, I didn't have a whole

slice. I ate my pecan pie slowly so I could

savor every bite. I only have it every now and then

in, (and here's that work again)...moderation.

Oh, I can still taste that piece of pecan pie I had

yesterday, today. And the memory of it will

last me for a whole week, 'til I have half-a-slice

of New York style cheesecake...next week.

LOL.

You've heard the old saying, everything

in moderation. Well, those are wise words and

true, especially when it comes to food. You should follow

that rule for the rest of your life.

By the way, my FoodMover is based on the sensible idea

of moderation. Do you have a FoodMover? Wouldn't you

like to learn how to eat the right way, once and for

all? Then the

FoodMover is the perfect tool for you. It'll

teach you how to eat right and...in moderation,

every day!

Love,
