Guest guest
MAKING OUT... Saturday, 20 November 2010 No, we're not talking about kissing today. We're talking about "making out" your...grocery shopping list. Oh yes, it's that great Saturday before Thanksgiving. And today, millions of Americans will go shopping for the foods they'll be serving for their Thanksgiving Day feasts. They'll stroll through the endless aisles of the supercenter near their homes, grocery lists in hand. While I'm on the subject, let me ask you something. Have you ever sneaked a peek at someone as they were looking over their shopping lists while they were in the supermarket? Hey, what ever happened to good penmanship? I'd have a hard time reading some of their lists and probably end up coming home with lots of the wrong foods. LOL. And do you remember where you spent last Thanksgiving? Do you remember what you weighed? Are you lighter or heavier than you were at this time lasy year? Well, whatever stage you're at right now, with a weight-loss or a weight gain, I want to help make sure you have a healthy Thanksgiving Day this year. And if you're one of those Americans headed for the supermarket today, I have some suggestions for your Thanksgiving dinner shopping list. Now some of you will eat at home and also have company over this year. And some of you will actually be the company as you have dinner with other family members. You may also be bringing one of the dishes to be served. And whether you're eating at home or bringing a dish to someone else's house, the key it to keep those dishes healthy. Are you baking a turkey this year? If you are, I hope you're not deep-frying it like a lot of people in the South do. But instead of a turkey, maybe you're putting a couple of nice chickens on the rotisserie. What about your salad? Make it especially colorful this year. Add halved-cherry tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, radishes, carrots and spinach, (Add even more freebie veggies, if you like.) Then make a nice Dijon vinaigrette dressing for your salad. You can also cube some slices of whole-wheat bread and make your own fresh, homemade croutons. And speaking of whole-wheat bread, you can make your stuffing with those cubes of it, too. I'm serving more than one vegetable this year. (Are you?) I'm roasting some butternut squash, onions, parsnips and Brussels sprouts. I know you're going to make that cranberry relish recipe from the back of the Ocean Spray bag, aren't you? Well this year, I'm taking Ocean Spray's recipe and adding pieces of pineapple and apple to it. If you want all of your dishes to have a sensational taste, then you should be sure to add some fresh herbs to your shopping list. Herbs like fresh basil for your salad, rosemary for your roasted chicken and a little thyme for your roasted root vegetables. I'm also serving yams this year...whipped yams. I bake the yams, peel them, then put them in a bowl with a little I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!, a couple teaspoons of fat-free sour cream and whip them using my handheld electric mixer. I add fresh-ground white pepper & nutmeg and...it's ready. Mmmmm, I can just feel those smooth whipped yams sliding across my taste buds...so-o-o-o good! Wait! We haven't discussed dessert yet! How's about creating a light but tasty strawberry short cake? You take slices of angel food cake, top it with sliced fresh or frozen strawberries and low-fat Cool Whip. Ahhhh, light and tasty, instead of those heavy slices of pumpkin pie! So if you're going grocery shopping today, please add my suggestions to your list. I want you to put together a delicious but healthy Thanksgiving dinner for you and your family. Happy, healthy shopping! Love,
