DON'T TEMPT ME!

Sunday, 06 June 2010

No matter where we go...we'll find food. And oh yes, I grew up in a home where there was always lots of food. I'm telling you, I spent more time in our kitchen than I did in my bedroom...LOL!

Now believe it or not, my parents, even though they were both very thin, were also food connoisseurs. Everyday was a like party in our kitchen. My parents always took my brother, Lenny and I grocery shopping with them. Everything about food was explained to us when we were young. When my mother bought something we weren't familiar with at the supermarket, she loved taking time to tell us something about the food she'd just bought."Now you see, boys? This is an avocado and it's very delicious. I'm going to make a salad tonight using them. Just wait 'til you taste it!"And oh, both my parents had a sweet tooth. There was a bakery in the French Quarter they just loved. (I did, too!) My folks would go there and bring home all kinds of pastries, cakes and pies. And surprise...I ended up having my own sweet tooth!

There was a cabinet in our kitchen that was the dedicated "snack cabinet." (My favorite!) I can't remember a time when there weren't potato chips, candy and tins of Planter's nuts in that cabinet. My parents were also cheese lovers so we always had three or four kinds of cheese tucked away in the fridge. Sometimes, I'd sit in the kitchen allowing all of the treats there to tempt me. Hey, big boy! Wouldn't you just love a nice bologna and cheese sandwich with extra mayo?Pssst! C'mon, tear open the top of my bag then reach in here and get yourself a big-old handful of salty potato chips. You know you're just dying to hear that crunch!Don't you want a donut, baby? Of course you do. Pop open this Krispy Kreme box and grab yourself one of my jelly rolls filled with cherry preserves...Mmmm!

And sure enough, I'd give in to my temptations and end up eating until I just about got sick! And of course after I was done, I'd promise myself to never eat like that again. That is, until the next day when I very conveniently forgot my little promise! So, were you raised around a lot of tempting foods, too? And if you were, did you do the same things I did? Did you constantly yield to temptation? And are you still tempted by lots of fattening foods to this day? Do you go to dine at a restaurant, look over the menu and tempt yourself to have the fried chicken dinner instead of the grilled chicken you know is the smarter choice?Do you go to people's homes for parties or for dinner and feast on the heavy appetizers loaded with cream and butter? When you invite someone to your home for dinner, do you go out of your way to cook something you know is really fattening? And even though you have weight to lose...you always give in to those temptations. Is this you?

Now look, you're going to have to look at your food temptations differently now. You have to question those temptations as if you were an attorney on Law & Order. "Why do you mean so much to me? Aren't you one of the same foods that made me overweight in the first place?" You have to decide which is more important, your health or that big-old plate of deep-fried onion rings. Which is it, huh?Every time you eat something fattening, you're doing more damage to your body. So today, you have to begin looking at food differently. You have to start saying NO to the foods that led to your gaining weight. On this Sunday, I want you to make a vow to no longer...lead yourself into temptation!Love,

No, it wasn't during my childhood that there were temptations. It wasn't even a concept to eat outide the three meals a day, nor did we snack, nor did we have dessert except on holidays. We did not even have seconds during meals, the food was placed on a plate in the kitchen and served, that was it. No bowls or platters of food on the table unless it was smorrebrod, and that was usually only when company came. The only time I had ice cream was on the summer trip to our summer house. Tops, I had 3 ice cream cones a year. I was a thin child who could care less about food and more about playing outside!

No restaurants either. I recall very few restaurant experiences. People in those days ate at each other's houses more often than they ate in a restaurant. Just a whole different environment than today.

I never over ate in any social situation, even when my bingeing was at it's worst. Overeating for me was a very private thing, secretive. I know I wasn't fooling anyone, but it was simply was my upbringing, "ladies never gorge themselves in public". I ate small portions at gatherings and when I got home, I ate all the things I denied myself! Once I feel into the trap of eating to suppress anxiety, I was in a horrible cycle of bingeing in secret.

Sometimes, I think RS just loves to talk about the foods of his childhood! My husband is like that, always listing all the foods he misses. Me, I would rather go back to how it was in my childhood, when food was something you ate at a meal and nothing more.
