HEY, BIG SPENDER!

Thursday, 24 June 2010

The other day in class, I asked my students if they had savings accounts. And let's just say that not a lot of hands went up when I asked that question. Hey, even when times are tough, like these days, you've got to budget yourself and put away a little money for a rainy day.

Putting money into your savings is a good thing because by putting it aside that way, you're less likely to spend it. And as you keep saving, before you know it, you'll build your savings. Who knows what great things you'll be able to do with all the money you've saved? And it's such a good feeling to see those numbers adding up in your savings.

Okay, some things, like money, should be saved. But some things in your life should be spent. And what things am I talking about? Well, the calories you consume, that's what! Are you getting the picture? Okay, I'll explain...

Everyday, you consume calories so your body becomes like a "savings account." But instead of money, your body saves calories. When you consume too many calories, the "interest" you receive comes in the way of added pounds. You gain weight from eating too much dairy, too much fat and too many starches. When you hold on to or "save" those extra calories in your body, that's when the pounds begin to add up. To prevent those pounds from adding up, you have to spend those calories saved inside your body. Yep, you have to spend them! And you spend them by burning those extra calories with...exercise. Exercise raises your body temperature and, in the process, burns hundred of the calories saved inside your body. When you do your stretching, you burn calories. When you do your cardio, you burn more calories. And you can burn a whole lotta calories by lifting weights or doing some kind of resistance training.

Consider this: If you burn 500 extra calories a day, that adds up to 3500 extra calories burned during the course of one week. And that also equals...a one-pound weight-loss. Sometimes I end up exercising more anticipating I'll be eating more on a particular day. LOL. But you know what? It works for me!When I'm teaching at Slimmons or doing workouts in my gym at home, I constantly think about how many calories I'm spending by being so active. Not only does exercise burn off calories but it also gives you an overall good feeling inside. You feel good knowing good health is running through that body of yours. Those are the kinds of thoughts you should have in your head when you're working out. You should have those thoughts, for instance, when you're walking up a hill and your heart is working hard for you. You should be thinking about how many extra calories you're spending whenever you workout. Think about it when you're lifting your arms and your legs high. You're doing something really good for your body by spending those saved-up calories. It invigorates your mind, your soul and fills you with new life.

So, how much do you have in your "savings"? Remember, save your money but spend those calories...by sweatin'!Hey, Big Spender! Come on and spend some of those calories with me!Love,
