Guest guest
CONVERSATION WITH A FRIEND: PART 1 Tuesday, 22 June 2010 R-i-i-i-i-n-n-g!"Hello?" "Liz? Hi, it's Kathy. How are you?""Oh, hi Kathy, I'm doing fine.""Uh, are you really, Liz? There's something in your voice. Sounds like things are not so fine.""Kathy, I don't know how you can tell when something's bothering me. And the truth is I guess I'm really not doing so fine." "Liz, you're my best friend. I can always tell when something's wrong. So tell me what's going on. What are you doing?""Kathy, you don't want to know so I'm not even going to bother telling you.""Now stop it Liz! You know you can tell me anything.""Oh I know, Kat. You truly are my best friend and that's why I don't want to tell you what I'm doing. It'll only get you upset, cause you grief and get you all upset with me. And I'd really rather not go through all that right now, okay?""Hey, Liz honey, grief is part of life. We deal with it and go on. Besides, what can you tell me that's going to cause me so much grief anyway, huh?""Oh, all right Kathy! I'm sitting here watching the soccer match with Ben and Jerry!""Ben and Jerry? Who're Ben and Jerry, Liz? I don't think I know them." "I think you do know them, Kathy. I'm talking about Ben and Jerry of Ben & Jerry's ice cream!"After hearing that, there was a pause on the phone before Kathy began talking again. "Ice cream? Liz, what are you doing eating ice cream? You're diabetic and you know it's no good for you!""See, I knew you would get upset, Kathy. I guess I was in the middle of a little pity-party for myself today and I thought having this bowl of ice cream would make me feel better. Is that so wrong?""Excuse me? Liz, you're taking medication for diabetes. Well, I hope you're taking your medications, anyway! You know there're a whole lot of foods you shouldn't be eating because of your diabetes.""Yeah," Liz answered, "and which foods are those?""Well, ice cream, for one," Kathy fired back! "Come on, Liz, didn't your doctor tell you which foods you should be eating and which foods you should not be eating because of your diabetes?" "No, he didn't," Liz answered.Surprised, Kathy asked, "Wait. You mean to tell me your doctor didn't send you to a nutritionist or a dietitian to help in planning your meals after you got your diabetes diagnosis?"Once again, Liz's answer was "No."Now Kathy was a bit taken aback. "What kind of doctor are you seeing, Liz," she asked. "That really upsets me. Well, here's what I'm going to do. Today, I'm going to search the Internet and pull up some information I want you to read." Now Liz wanted to know if the information Kathy pulled up was going to "upset her.""I don't know, Liz. It may upset you but that's not the point. You still really need to read it then think about your life and your health.""Then no," Liz told Kathy! "If what you're going to send will upset me then I'm not even going to read it!" Undeterred, Kathy told Liz, "Look, it'll take me about an hour but I after I do a little research, I'm going to be E-mailing this information to you and I want you to read it. Do you understand?"Fishing for excuses, Liz told her, "Oh, Kathy. I forgot to tell you, I've been having trouble with my computer all week!""L-i-i-i-z, I don't believe you!" Kathy replied. And with that, they couldn't help it, they both began to laugh!"Now, you be checking your E-mails, Liz. I'll be sending you this information just as soon as I can.""Okay, Kathy. Thanks...gotta go. I'll talk to you later!"This story will be continued tomorrow.Love,
