Guest guest
THE FOLDED FLAG Monday, 31 May 2010 Today we celebrate Memorial Day. A lot of Americans look forward to this day because they have Monday off so have a nice long, three-day weekend to enjoy. Many people will have picnics or barbecues today either at a park or maybe in their own backyards. It's a great day to spend time with family and friends, have some fun, good food and maybe even drink a bottle of Bud Light. But the true meaning of Memorial Day goes way beyond having a day off and barbecuing chicken. Now don't get me wrong, those things are okay. But let's not forget that the real meaning of today is about remembering the brave soldiers who've paid the ultimate sacrifice for our many freedoms, with their lives.About 150 years ago, Memorial Day was established in our country. Its purpose was to set aside a special day to acknowledge the sacrifices of all the soldiers who've fought for our country since we became a nation way back in 1776. Those soldiers are in Heaven now but we must never, ever forget them. A lot of people like to say that freedom isn't "free" and...they're right. Freedom comes with a price that can't be measured in dollars. I can't tell you how many wars we've fought abroad but I know there've been many of them. And in each of those wars, hundreds and often many thousands of soldiers have sacrificed their lives...for us. There have been many memorials built to honor these brave men and women. And when we lose a soldier, it affects everyone. Their families, their friends and really, all of America feels the pain when we lose one of our brave warriors. I'll be honest with you and admit that watching the news can be very depressing for me sometimes. Especially when I see how many soldiers have lost their lives in our most current battles being fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. I receive lots of E-mails from family members who have loved ones fighting in the Middle East.It really takes a special person to be a soldier. A lot of them grew up since childhood wanting to become soldiers one day. It was just in their blood. They join the armed services for one special reason. It's because they love their country and want to fight to protect it. They leave behind parents, siblings, husbands, wives and children as they travel to some of the most dangerous places in the world. Think about it, their sacrifices are for me and you. Today I will say a special prayer for all of our soldiers and for the families of those soldiers fighting for us in faraway lands. I pray they'll all return home safely. And while you're celebrating today with your own families, I'm asking that you take a moment out of this day to say a prayer for all of the families in America who're missing someone special in their lives...one of our soldiers. God bless them all.Happy Memorial Day & God Bless America!Love,
