THE CHOICE: PART 1

Wednesday, 26 May 2010

When she was growing up, can never remember a time when her mother wasn't going to Weight Watchers. In fact, most of the time she'd have to go with her mother to the meetings. noticed how her mother always looked petrified waiting for her turn to be weighed. And when her turn came to get on the scale, if her mother hadn't lost weight or maybe even gained weight during the week, would watch as tears streamed from her eyes when she returned to her seat.

And worse, when they got home from the meeting, her mom would always go into the kitchen and make herself a not-so-little snack, even as she continued crying over her weight. But the worse news of all is that soon began to follow in her mother's footsteps. It wasn't long before any time she got upset about something, like her mother, she'd begin crying and turn to food for "comfort."At school, avoided taking PE classes as if she'd get the plague by going. But the truth was, her biggest fear of taking PE was having to change clothes in front of all the other girls. She thought her body looked just plain awful and wasn't about to let the other girls see how she looked in her "birthday suit." never shared her thoughts with anyone except her best friend, Jill. The two of them often did their homework together and spent a lot of time over the weekend hanging out at the mall. Jill would always tell how pretty she was and that if she lost some weight, she'd be a real knockout! would just laugh whenever Jill told her how pretty she was.

And whenever she got home from an outing with Jill, would go to her bedroom, stand in front of the mirror eyeing and saying to herself, "Please! There's no way I'm 'pretty'! I don't care what Jill says. God knows, I'll never be a 'knockout.' Who is she kidding?"So just like her mother, continued the bad habit of using food to console her when she was down or upset about something. And in the meantime, her weight continued to escalate until she was knocking at the door of an all-time high weight of 250 pounds. Her added size was joined, more and more, by depression over her weight. There were days she didn't even want to get out of bed because she was feeling so down. And when she finally got out of bed, the first thing she had to do was take medications for the medical issues she was already experiencing over her weight...and at such an early age, too.

Sometimes, would sit by herself all alone in her bedroom and wonder what had happened to her life. While she was there, she'd often think about Jill's words and all the nice things she had to say about how pretty she was. And sadly, had become such a loner that she didn't see Jill nearly as often as she used to. She didn't want her to see how much weight she was continuing to gain. was actually beginning to hide herself from the world and the few friends she had, including her best friend, Jill. What was she going to do with her life? Oh, she just felt so helpless. This story will continue tomorrow...Love,
