Guest guest
SWEATIN' TO THE 80s Saturday, 26 June 2010 All this week I've been listening to tunes from the 80s. Billboard magazine puts out a book that lists all of the top hits from the 1950s through the current day. It's like a little "Top Ten" encyclopedia. Let me tell ya', it's a thick book. And I'm proud to say that I know just about every one of the hits listed in it. When I want to make a music CD to play in class, I spend hours thumbing through my Billboard book choosing the right mix of songs. And I'm so excited about today's class at Slimmons. I'll be playing hit tunes from the early through mid-80s.I'm starting off with the song Celebration by Kool & The Gang. I'm very familiar with that song and not only because it's one of my faves from the past. But I used it in my workout video, Dance Your Pants Off. We're gonna have a good time tonight...well, all right!Do you remember the artist, Sheena Easton? One of her big 80s hits was Morning Train. (My baby takes the morning train!) That song is another one of my all-time favorites. When playing it years ago, I used to lip-sync to it while "performing" in front of the mirror. Oh, and we can't forget those movie soundtracks. One of my favorite movies from the 80s was Fame. After seeing it, as I walked out of the theater, I was still singing the theme song. Fame! I'm gonna live forever. Baby remember by name...remember, remember!Another song from Fame that I'm crazy about to this day is Maniac by Sembello. Oh, what a beat that song had. I can't wait to see everyone in class showing me how much of a maniac they are with their moves when I play that song today!I remember when the next song I'm going to tell you about came out. I was in Tower Records, a landmark record store at the time on Sunset Blvd. here in Los Angeles. They were playing the song on the store's music system as I was shopping and I just had to have it. The song is by Toni Basil and it's called Mickey. I used that number in my Party Off The Pounds video. I guess I always wanted to be a cheerleader and every time I played Mickey...I was one! And come on, how could I possibly do an 80s-themed workout without the Queen of Disco herself, Ms. Donna Summer? Back in the 80s, she told us, She Works Hard For The Money. And you know what? I believed her! I've also got Rick on hand and he's gonna be a Super Freak for us...(what else)? She's a very kinky girl...the kind you don't take home to Momma! What a song and it was just so, well...freaky!For our cool own, I'll be playing Angel Of The Morning by Juice Newton. It's such a pretty song, perfect for cooling down those hardworking muscles of ours. Hey wait, I've got an idea. While I'm teaching class at Slimmons today, why don't you pull out some of your favorite 80s hits and dance right along with us. Won't that be fun?!Now before I go, let me leave you with one more hit from the 80s. It's by Branigan and it's called Gloria! Now, I want you to have a glorious Saturday. Please eat healthy and, of course, get in that sweatin' time today, too! Say hi to all of your families from me!Love,
