W.L.S.

Monday, 01 February 2010

I'm sitting here on February 1st looking through my E-mails. And so many of them are from people who've had W.L.S.---Weight-Loss Surgery. Oh, there are many forms of W.L.S. There's the gastric bypass surgery and then there're all of the lapband surgeries out there, too.

The other day, I saw a billboard advertising the "oBand" Surgery Centers. And you can bet your last dollar that, right now, they're figuring out other ways to perform weight loss surgeries. On the sides of buses here in Los Angeles, you see ads for weight loss surgery clinics. In the picture accompanying some of the ads is a photo of a woman above a scale jumping in the air for joy! But among the many E-mails sitting on my desk, well, there're not any from people "jumping for joy!"A lot of individuals who have weight-loss surgery believe that it'll, like magic, solve their obesity problems. These weight lost surgeries have one thing in common. They make the size of your stomach smaller so that, following the surgery, the stomach holds only about three ounces of food! But here's the thing. A person can still cheat by eating those three ounces more often during the course of their days! And oh, what a shame. Because they end up gaining back any of the weight they may have loss with the surgery.

This one letter I'm reading is from a lady who had the lapband surgery, lost 60 pounds but soon put 40 pounds right back on. And now says she doesn't know what to do. If you've had bad results following a weight-loss surgery, you need to contact your doctor, let him or her know what's going on and ask for help.Another letter I have here is from a man who had the surgery but then had some medical problems. I couldn't believe that he ended up having to endure a second weight-loss surgery! To all of you who've had success with one of these surgeries and by success, I mean you've kept off the weight, I want you to keep going strong! And to those of you who've put weight back on following the surgery or you're having medical problems, you need to contact the doctor who performed your surgery, right away! When people write and tell me they're having weight-loss surgery, I have to let them know that they still must watch what they eat for the rest of their lives. And they have to exercise faithfully to aid the weight loss and tone their bodies as they lose weight.

If you're considering having one of these surgeries, I hope the doctor who performs it has some important educational meetings with you leading up to it. That way, you'll honestly know what to expect in those days following the surgery. And please listen up: No matter how you're trying to lose weight, remember, without portion control and working out, you will never, ever be happy when you look in the mirror. Okay, everybody, you have 28 days at your feet starting today! Now...get to work wand walk a straight line during this month of February toward your weight-loss goal!Love,
