Guest guest
ARE YOU ON A DIET? Monday, 05 April 2010 I went on my first diet when I was only around eight years-old. I went from fried chicken and oyster PO-boys to plain tuna and sliced tomatoes overnight. Hey...was that "punishment" or what? And after I fell off that first diet, I may as well tell you that over these many years, I've tried many, many more. I can remember going to the supermarket and overhearing women shoppers talking about the diets they were on. I would always get in close so I could hear what they were saying...", I'm on the Grapefruit Diet now. On it, I eat three grapefruits a day and you know what? I'm losing weight!"Well, that's all I needed to hear! I picked up a bunch of grapefruit from the produce section that very same day. I was all gung-ho, at first but...those grapefruit and I lasted about six days together! That's 18 of those big-old grapefruit and by then, I never wanted to even see another grapefruit again!Later on my "diet-train," I tried the Cabbage Soup Diet. And with it, you had to have three bowls of cabbage soup a day. (Sounds yummy, doesn't it?) Well, surprise! I got bored with that one...in a hurry! Now all of these years have gone by and today, new diets are constantly being created for people who, (I think), actually like to diet! I mean, think about it. Lots of people just pop from one diet to the next and...why? Well, it's because they've turned dieting into a lifestyle! People write me all the time telling me what strange diets they've been on. You know---I don't believe in "diets." In fact, my very first book was called Never Say Diet. And let me tell you, nearly 100% of the people who live their lives going from one diet to the next, never reach their weight-loss goals. Oh, what a shame. All of that time and energy spent...with no results. Americans keep gaining and losing the same amounts of weight their entire lives. That's why my weight-loss solution has always been more like a LIVE-IT program! Hey, you don't want to DIE-it, you want to LIVE-it! (Get it?) That's why I created the Deal-A-Meal program years ago followed by my FoodMover today. See, losing weight is not about eating one kind of food all day long. It's not about looking at your plate at dinner time and feeling punished either. What is it about? Well, it's about eating from all six of the food groups and eating those foods in the right size portions.People often ask me what "magic" food can help them lose weight faster. And my answer is always the same...there is none! Your body needs a mix from all six food groups to help keep it strong and healthy. You just have to eat the right foods, in the right amounts. So I want you to lay all of your cards out there on the table for me. Are you on some quirky diet you found on the Internet or was sent to you by a well-meaning friend? Don't even think about it! Because many of these diets can make you sick or lead to medical problems for you later on. I mean it...no more "diets." LIVE-it today! Have a great salad, grill some chicken and prepare some nutritious brown rice for your dinner. Be sure to have your fruit today and eat it slowly. Think about the growers around the world who've harvested that wonderful fruit just for you. (Oh, am I giving you a little too much guilt today?)Seriously, have the talent to eat balanced and you'll not keep gaining and losing those same-old pounds, over-and-over again! LIVE-IT everyday and, this time, you'll lose those pounds and...keep them off. (For life!)Happy, healthy eating to you.Love,
Guest guest
My thoughts on the subject. Warning> Very opinionated. I have two minds about the whole subject of dieting. I do think that it is detrimental to children and young women to be pressured into dieting and body image issues at an early age. I do think most diets are meant to be short term and are fine for those who have less than 50 pounds to lose. The above mentioned would benefit most from just eating healthier and eating less over all. But for the obese, I have a real difficult time with the elusive "just cut back: "just eat better foods" and the popular coined term "no diet" diets. I have a pet peeve about every touted diet being about how much you can eat, that volume is more important than quality. I get irritated with "this is easy!" or "you'll never be hungry". There is a disconnect from reality here. We should be learning to feel and get use to hunger! Hunger is a vital body cue that it is time to eat. Dieting is not easy and to say it is, is well, a lie. Dieting is a lesson in integrity, self honesty, discipline and tenacity. Each time we start a project, whether at work or on our home or even a creative one, we have to plan it, find the materials to build it and work hard on it to accomplish a goal. It's a step by step process. We plan it all out for the best results because it is not easy to accomplish without direction. We can't build a house by hoping we feel like doing the work that day or by using whatever is laying around. If we build haphazardly, we may not have a strong foundation, it may end up crumbling all around us. I have mentioned this before, but I think of dieting for those of us with a significant amount of weight to lose, as a therapy, as though it were a prescription to correct an illness, not as a "lifestyle". When we think of it as a lifestyle change, there are no tangible goals to accomplish. It is vague, it has too many loopholes of compromise. At the end of the structured project (a diet) when the weight has been lost, it is then time to move into a lifestyle of healthier eating. I am a big fan of Intuitive Eating. I continue to learn the principles and the concepts. I tried it back in the 1990's when it became popular, but being obese, it was too abstract for me to do more than maintain my weight (a 25 pound loss, but nothing more than that for many years). I would rather see obese children and young women learn these techniques than go on a diet. But for me, for those with significant weight to lose, it is so elusive. I have wanted to attempt it this time around, but I know deep down I would use it as an excuse to slack off and eat more than I need. Right now, my mind still plays games when it comes to eating. Anyways, I think that Mr wants to make it all sound fun and doable in this post His food mover is actually a diet to follow and he is sugar coating that in order to encourage adherence. Of course the diet should be positive and encouraging and it's up to us to make it fun to do, but to disguise the reality of it, I think is wrong. To me, part of the acceptance of taking responsibility for ourselves is to understand the seriousness of dieting. It's not always easy and fun, we do feel hunger and we have to deal with the abundance of food before us at every turn. So in that way, I object to the notion that dieting can be disguised as a lifestyle change. But that is just me. I would love to hear everyone's opinion. I really enjoy reading the daily inspirations, cause I like to be made to think. lol.
