OBSESSED WITH PROCESSED

Tuesday, 09 March 2010

When I travel around the country, I always bring a couple of books along with me to read. And I read all kinds of books. I started out reading mostly murder mysteries but recently, I read a very interesting book about God and a new book about nutrition. More specifically, that second book was all about the foods we're eating in this country.

First off, after reading that book, I'm telling you that you'll never want to eat anything but grass! (It was downright scary.) You see, it seems like we live in a processed food world.

I went to the grocery store yesterday and made sure to bring my glasses along with me. My goal was to read as many ingredient labels as I could to see just what our foods contain. Now let me ask, how many aisles of processed foods do you think are in your favorite supermarket? In the store I visited, there were processed foods lining just about every aisle, if not every shelf! I believe we've become a nation of "processed people." These days, so many foods contain corn syrup which is just about one of the worse things you can put in your mouth. You'll find corn syrup in everything from children's cereals to ketchup. While I was in the market, I read the labels of maybe a hundred boxes and bags of processed foods. And I couldn't believe how many of them contained corn syrup as an ingredient.

Next, I waltzed over to the frozen foods section where I found more processed foods. And reading the amount of salt in those little dinners and specialty foods just about made my blood pressure go up! Those foods were like little mummies placed in frozen packages and preserved in salt!I also counted hundreds of foods that contained MSG and food coloring along with artificial flavors and ingredients. I say, if you can't pronounce the ingredients of the food you're eating and know what they are, stay away from them! Many of today's doctors and nutritionists believe that processed foods make us sick and, over time, will lead to our having any number of medical problems. And worse is that some of them may even lead to death. Now come on, doesn't that shake you up a bit?

I want you go into your kitchen and see how many products there contain corn syrup, MSG, and ingredients you can't pronounce. Then gather all of those products on your kitchen table and, if you have a weight problem, you may very well be looking at some of the culprits! Stop eating those foods and you'll end up seeing your waistline again. Now I'll admit that once in a while, I'll have something that's a little processed to keep me human. LOL. (Yes...I am human!) But I don't have those processed foods often. So many people's food programs today are made up of 70-80% processed foods. If you're one of them, you've really got to change over to a healthier eating program. And that's something I'll be discussing with you tomorrow.Love,
