"COME SIT DOWN."

Saturday, 09 January 2010

"Mrs. , please come sit down in my office. You know, we hadn't seen you in nearly four years. We called your home and even sent you little post card reminders for you to come in for your physical. We didn't hear back from you for so long, we thought you must have changed doctors. But I'm glad you finally made it in last week. And today, I want to give you the results of the physical we gave you."

Dr. pulled up Mrs. 's chart and puts on his glasses as he continued..."I wish I could tell you that everything is okay but honestly, I can't. I mean, you're not taking very good care of yourself, Mrs. . And your body is suffering as a result."Mrs. 's mouth felt a little dry as she listened to Dr. and she asked for a glass of water. Dr. had one of his nurses bring in a glass of cold water. He noticed that Mrs. 's hands were trembling a little as she reached for the glass. Dr. then began to share the results from her chart."Your cholesterol is 400 and that's a very dangerous level, Mrs. . And I'm sorry to say that your triglycerides are even higher. Your blood pressure is also high and your liver is slightly swollen."

After receiving all of this disturbing news, Mrs. reached into her purse for some Kleenex. "Now don't panic Mrs. ," Dr. continued. "I'm not telling you these things to upset you. I'm telling you about these problems so that we can make things better for you. I'm going to have to put you on some medications. You'll be taking a pill for your cholesterol and another for your blood pressure. We'll have to run some more tests on your liver to find out why it's a little enlarged. Mrs. , you're going to have to cut down on the amount of fat and sugars you're eating. I don't believe you're giving your body enough fruits and vegetables either. I also think you're consuming too many starches. Now the good news is that you can turn all of these negatives around, Mrs. . And to help, I have a little gift for you. It's one of ' FoodMovers. I give it to my patients to help teach them how to eat the right way."As she examines it, Mrs. admits she's heard of the FoodMover and says she's willing to try it. Dr. is pleased to hear her say that and then has something else to tell her. "Mrs. , You really need to be more active so I also want you to have one of exercise DVDs. It's called Sweatin' To The Oldies and lots of my patients have had great success working out with it. I'd like you to start working out with it, too."

With her tools for a healthier lifestyle in hand, Dr. escorted Mrs. to the door, telling her, "Now I need to see you again in six weeks. So I want you to make an appointment with Kathy on the way out, okay?"Mrs. replied, "Thank You, Dr. ! And I promise, you will see a big change in me the next time I come in. And thank you for my gifts, too!"So, when's the last time you had a complete physical? If it's been a while, please don't be like Mrs. and put it off any longer. Call your doctor and make an appointment to get in and have yourself checked out from head to toe. (In today's message, I played the role of Dr. and Mrs. . Thank You for coming!)Love,
