Happy Birthday, !!! Thanks for sharing this, happy that had so much

fun too and this gives me hope that may someday enjoy his bday and know

how to open presents!!! yeaaa, Dawn (also that he can communicate to you what he

wants for presents!)

's Birthday

First, Happy birthday, Gareth!

's birthday was Friday. My mom called Thursday night and asked if we'd

like to have company on 's birthday. We haven't seen my parents since

Christmas, so I said of course! She asked what to get him, and I told her I

had gotten him a little kit at Walmart that was to make critter keeper, for

5 years old and older. She said she'd look. They got her about 3pm Friday,

just before got up and about an hour before got off the bus. He

never got off that bus so quickly! I had already made most of the

preparations for dinner (just marinated steak, salad and frozen veggies, as

well as a gluten-free carrot/pineapple cake for , with Cream cheese

icing) and sent it over to MIL's house. she has a big house, with a

conference table for a dining room table, comfortably seats about 10 people.

My table could squeeze in 6, and we had 9, so I'm glad she offered. She got

the food all prepared so we just had to show up. didn't eat with us,

spent the whole time on couch with his head in a pillow. After dinner, we

lit the candles (all 12 of them! can't believe he's 12 already) but he

wouldn't come to the table. It took letting his brother blow out the

candles to get him to the table. He loved opening all his presents. Mom

couldn't find the kits I had gotten at her Wal-Mart, so she had gotten some

for 8 year olds, that couldn't be taken apart. (We went Saturday to our

Wal-Mart and got new ones and she turned hers back in at her Toys R Us when

she got home). I also got him a new helmet and knee/elbow pads and wrist

supports (if he falls and tries to catch himself - which he usually doesn't

do, most autistic kids don't try to stop the fall I've read - he'd break his

wrists) and a horn for his bike that I plan on fixing up. I found out that

training wheels will fit a 20 " bike, so we'll wait on the trike for now. If

he can't ride the bike even with training wheels, we'll check into it. This

is a bike that DH bought to ride around the base in Hawaii, because it (the

base) was just so huge. I still have to get it serviced, oiled, etc. But

anyway, loved the kits, and I helped him by showing him how to look at

the pictures to put it together. He made a critter keeper (he said he wants

to put his hamster in it to take it to school for show and tell), a CD/Movie

rack and a small tool box. And naturally, he made them all yesterday. He

said he wants to buy more, so I'll have to keep my eye out for more.

Friday, he also took gluten-free chocolate chip cookies (which are so good

he almost has to hide them from me - if anyone wants the recipe I'll copy it

down) to school to share. Today he took a recipe called Dr. Bird cake (it's

a kind of banana cake) that I made into muffin pans instead of a bundt cake

to Sunday school. The problem is, he decided he'd rather be in the 1st

grade class, where the helper that he likes (well, loves, Mr. Ron is great

with him) is and it got lost in the transition that they were to share. So

he brought almost all of them home with him. But he had a blast. They sang

happy birthday to him and 2 others that had birthdays and he got a toy

truck.

I think it had to be the easiest birthday yet, behaviorally. Today he got

to see his great aunt and uncle (that we haven't seen more than just in

passing since was born). They were surprised how much he's grown and

I think (they didn't actually come out and say it, but I could tell) how

better his behavior were. But she's always been real good with him, real

patient. I think she had the attitude that she could put up with just about

anything from him for a short time, if I could do it 24/7 (and I mean that

in a positive way). I never felt embarrassed around her. It's DH's aunt.

Oh, I almost forgot the present he like the best. He got a Nick Click

electronic camera. Problem is, I can't get the software to work on my

computer, so he may have received a $10 toy camera! I have to call customer

support tomorrow and see what the problem is.

Well, this ended up longer than I had expected, thanks for *listening* - I

just love it when has such a good time. He wants to take his Movie

holder to school tomorrow after he puts his name on it. It came with

stencils.

My mom said she'd be back up next month for 's birthday (they just live

2.5 hours south of us) and they're bringing my grandma, but she doesn't do

stairs, so they won't be spending the night. will be on summer break

so they'll come up early.

Hi Ling!

Thanks for thinking of me. I know how busy you are.

My husband took me shopping for my birthday. Was supposed to get a

new sweater, cause I left mine in a resturaunt in Denver, but I

couldnt find a plain black cardigan. We dont have many shopping

choices here. But I did find a big cheesecake!

Also looking for a comfortable pair of shoes & no luck. This is how

goofy I have become- I had this 1 pair of comfy shoes, for years I

wore them, and they were looking pretty bad. So I found another, just

like them, was wearing the old ones in the yard and the new ones out.

Well I decided to throw the old ones out, in the midst of packing-

and obviously a brain fart. I threw one of each pair!!

Now I know I'm gettin old, but senility already?

How are you doing? Your kids still little & cute? (they grow out of

that)

Thanks again,

Hi !

The kids in school are still wonderful, as ever.... just getting a little

more mischevious now that they know me well. They can be really cute at

times... although my patience run dry very often. It is coming to the end of

the school year already, do not know if I will take them again next year...

Glad to hear that you had a great birthday!

Cheers, Ling

Wow, what a great birthday had!

Please wish her belated happy birthday greetings from us.

Sharon H.

Mom to , (14, DS) and , (10)

South Carolina

's birthday

Hi All,

turned 8 yesterday and was thrilled that her birthday was a

school holiday (OK, she finally agreed that it was for Martain Luther

King, but was very happy nonetheless!) She had her party Sunday at " The

Little Gym " , which is a low-key gymnastics place...... the played lots

of games and the kids had some free play on the equipment. The best

part is at the end, where they take the large foam " blocks " to make sort

of a throne, and the birthday girl sits up there and opens her gifts. I

invited each child to come and sit with her has opened that

child's gift, and they so much fun. She has come so far! She had her

friend sleep over (her first time) and they had a good time until

about noon the next day...... then they got a bit tired of each other,

though they were very tired from not sleeping much during the

sleepover. also has DS, so between the two to them and their

crazy sleep patterns, they woke up (and hence woke each other up) I

can't count how many times during the night :-( I spent the day

yawning, but it was great that had such a good time.

On Monday, my mom and dad sent a balloon boquet with a bunch of mylar

balloons (that will probably last until Easter) and some regular latex

balloons. The regular balloons had some confetti and rolled up dollar

bills in them. We weren't sure how would do with the loud

popping noise as she popped the confetti-filled balloons, but she saw

the money and went for it, LOL. $4 flew out of the first balloon, and

she was so excited and was yelling " I'm rich, I'm rich! " She finally

popped all 5 balloons and gather up her riches ($20 in all) and ran to

her room. I found her trying to stuff all those ones into her little

piggy bank! It was so cute, though she doesn't ever seem to want to go

shopping and spend her money (unlike her two sisters who get a gift card

and are ready to go 30 seconds later, LOL). She finished her night with

dinner at SoupPlantation (her favorite place to eat), but was pretty

tired....... had a little bit of food and some ice cream, and we called

it a night.

Today finished off the celebrations be having her class treat. She

brought in chocolate chip cookies, but was a bit disgruntled at recess

(I was working in Sammy's class, and ran into her on the way out) that

the teacher didn't let her pass them out before recess (she was going to

do it before they went to lunch). Hopefully this doesn't mess up her

day..... I think they teacher does typically let the birthday child pass

out their treats before recess, but for whatever reason, it didn't

happen today. Gotta work on that flexibility :-)

I can't believe she's 8.... time really does fly. And 8 years ago, I

couldn't have imagined what a cute, neat, fun, smart kid she's become,

while sitting in the hospital holding a floppy, mottled, black-mohawk

haired baby as a parade of doctors, nurses and specialists came and

poked and prodded her with sad looks on their faces. Not the welcome

into the world that she deserved, but once we got out of the hospital

and began life, it's just got better and better! Those memories of

wondering " when it she EVER going to walk " fade quickly as I watched her

run across the playground today, holding hands with her friend, as they

made their way to the girls playing jumprope. The wondering " will she

be able to talk to us " are long gone as we have to remind her each night

at dinner " it's someone elses turn to talk now .... you need to

stop talking and eat now. " Those RARE moments when she and Sammy sit

down together to do homework and helps Sammy read the

instructions, while Sammy easily helps on her math :-) I now

know how fortunate we've been...... not too many medical issues,

supportive family and friends, schools that educate her as we've asked,

church that welcomes her into children's programs without batting an

eye..... 's a lucky little girl, though many not intwined in

the DS community would think I'm nuts, I know you all will understand as

we count our blessings.

And I bet it won't be two weeks before I hear " Mom, next year I be nine

on my birthday, right? "

, mom to (10), (8), (6)...... getting

dangerously close to 16, 14 and 12 year old girls! Yikes!

ROFL! I can think of a lot worse words. Good for him for learning

correct anatomical terminology! And way cool that he could piece

together that if it happened in the cat it also happened with mom.

Reminds me of the time my oldest NT used the word vulva in front of

her kindergarten class when explaining where one girl kicked another.

Everyone about died, I guess cootchie would have been better.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHAEL......HOPE YOU ALL HAD A WONDERFUL DAY.

's Birthday

So, today is my son’s 8th birthday. We went over to my parent’s for cake and he said to me

“Mommy, do you remember in 1999 I came out of your uterus?â€

I swear to god. You see last week he saw kittens being born and I told him that the babies were in the mommy cat’s uterus. I didn’t want to say “stomach†because then he would think I was literal. Well, I guess he got the concept down :)
