Guest guest
's Daily MessageWednesdayDecember 20, 2006 BUTTERSCOTCH BOTTLES My parents were not pill poppers. Oh sure, they took an occasional aspirin when I gave them a headache but other than that, they took nothing. That`s far from the case for most of America these days, where everyone seems to have their own collection of little butterscotch bottles. Seems you can`t turn on the TV today without witnessing ads for a variety of pills for a variety of illnesses. Towards the end of each commercial, there`s always the voice of a man or a woman, softly telling you that this medication may cause bleeding, diarrhea, constipation, nausea or some other complication. (Gee, that really makes me want to try it!) Now don`t get me wrong, we`ve really made great strides in the medical world over the last 60 years. And many of these medications have helped people live longer and healthier. Bravo! But it`s my belief that millions of Americans are way overmedicated. There are leagues of doctors out there who, sadly, too happily write prescriptions for too many drugs. What medications are you on...pills for diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or depression? How much do you spend on pills each month? That much? Oh, that`s a lot. Are you seeing healthy results from taking your medications, or are you taking them and continuing to have medical problems? Do you think you take too many pills? A few moths ago, I spoke with Dolores from Alberta, Canada. She was 241 pounds, taking 16 various pills a day but still feeling miserable and hopeless. She told me that she was afraid to tell her doctor if anything else hurt, for fear of his prescribing yet another pill. I advised Dolores to find a new doctor, get a physical, and show her new doc all of the pills she was on to see what he had to say. She followed my advice and wrote to tell me about it. That second opinion really changed her life. Dolores has not only lost 26 pounds but her medications have been cut in half! If you truly believe that you`re popping too many pills a day, you may also want to get a second opinion. And if you focus on being positive, if you measure your portions carefully, if you work out your body and your mind, you`ll see fewer butterscotch bottles on your night stand, too!
