CHOW DOWN

We all were raised to walk, talk, and eat. We grew up watching everyone around us enjoy food. "Oh, look at mom`s face when she`s eating chocolate chip cookies! Look at Dad smiling over his thick, juicy New York steak smothered in onions. And see Grandma get that special twinkle in her eye while sipping on a martini with 3 olives." As we watch this festival of tastes, we are fed mushed up fruit, veggies, and protein from a jar, but our day will come… and it did! We began to imitate all those sounds of happy taste buds when we bite into a burger or shove a handful of hot French fries in our mouth or enjoy the warm piece of cheese and pepperoni pizza. And with every mouthful, we feel the love we were raised to feel.

Now that you`re an adult, do you feel you have a handle on your eating? Do you know what to eat and how much? Have you memorized all the portions of food that should pass through your lips? Do you think your meals are balanced? Do you eat enough fruit and vegetables daily? When`s the last time you peeled an orange or tangerine and just ate it while staring at clouds in the sky? Are you eating products made of whole wheat or whole grain? Have you been careful about not eating fried or greasy foods? Have you been eating less red meat and more fresh fish? Are the dairy products in your fridge fat free? Have you stopped eating out so much? Have you been drinking enough water?

You know, I had a big problem with portions, and that`s why I developed tools like the Deal-a-Meal cards and the FoodMover. There was a void in this area of weight loss accountability, and I filled it.

Your homework today is to answer all the questions above before 2007 comes along. And if you have a FoodMover, recommit yourself and make time to read all the food exchanges and begin to memorize them. Get your measuring cups and spoons out, and start to measure if you treasure your health!

Tomorrow, I will stand on my soapbox once again to explain to you the art of movement.

Love,
