TuesdayOctober 31, 2006DRESSIN`UP!

My father began making Halloween costumes for Lenny and me in September. I`m not kidding! While we were at school, Dad would sew his little heart out. We were not allowed to see the costumes until Halloween morning, just in case they needed a few adjustments before the sun went down. I would always drop my jaw when I saw what I would be wearing to trick or treat! We were clowns, toy soldiers, Indians, cowboys, vampires, and ghosts, and when we walked down the street, everyone would say, "Where did you get those costumes?" and I would chime in, "My dad made them!"

For a long time, I never dressed up for Halloween. Life just got in the way. It wasn`t until I opened Slimmons and began having a Halloween Costume Extravaganza each year that I started dressing up again. I have to tell you, it`s one of my favorite evenings spent at the studio. Everyone goes all out to make their costumes, just like my dad did!

Each year, I hold a little contest with cash prizes. I have to tell you, it`s hard to pick the winners because everyone looks so great. One year, a dear friend of mine came dressed as the Pillsbury Doughboy! She looked exactly like him, and when you poked her tummy, she laughed just like our favorite little boy! Once a student came dressed as a bat with a 6-foot wing span and nearly killed a few people in class!

Over the years on Halloween, I`ve met Pan, Tinkerbell, good and bad witches, Playboy bunnies, the Three Musketeers, Abraham Lincoln, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Barbra, a pirate, and a woman dressed as the Deal-a-Meal wallet and cards. I can`t wait until tonight to see everyone`s creation! All my students have asked me who I`m coming as, but mum`s the word till the sun goes down!

What are you doing tonight? Are you dressing up? Hey, if you`re in the neighborhood, why don`t you come to Slimmons tonight and have a blast with us? I get there around 6:00, and the sweatin` class starts at 6:30. Yes, we do work out while we`re all dressed up! Stay clear of the bat. Hope to see you tonight, and if not, have a happy, safe, low cal Halloween.

Love,
