What else are you doing? If your adrenals are exhausted or unsupported, ribose

will be of little help.

Ellen

What have been the experiences of people in this group with D-Ribose? Has it

helped? What symptoms did it help? Were there side effects?

I have severe cognitive problems and exhaustion. Would D-Ribose help? Are

there other supplements you would recommend?

Thank you!

I tried D-ribose a few years ago and immediately stopped using it when I

learned it was a potent glycating agent. It didn't do anything for me

except lighten my wallet.

The things, in particular, that worked for me to banish my cognitive

problems and exhaustion are Ginkgo biloba, bilberry, genuine (properly

sourced) Cat's Claw, and CoQ-10. The difference was astounding.

I tried twice - different brands. Teitlebaum recommends Corvalen. Neither helped

me at all. I'm taking NK support supplements recommended by my doc (CoQ10, Vit

C, Omega 3's, Vit D) plus HRT, T3/T4, magnesium, LDN, acyclovir & probably some

that my foggy brain can't remember. We're all slightly different, so your

individual needs are important. I agree about the adrenals, although HC for

years didn't help that much either. best wishes!

D-Ribose did nothing for me either. I used it for almost a year. There were no

side effects, but no forward effects either.  I have found nothing for

cognitive function yet :(

D-Ribose, combined with caffeine, is the absolute only way I get any use out of

my muscles these days (like for taking a bath). So I like it. I take 1/2 scoop

at a time, 6x/day, rather than full scoop 3x/day as usually recommended.

D Ribose makes me sleepy

Does this happen to anyone else?

D-ribose did nothing for me - positive or negative. I stopped taking it

because it's a potent glycating agent. The last thing I want is any

more problems!

D Ribose has really helped me! I take 5g in the morning with my coffe and it

gives me a boost. I was taking it at lunch and dinner, which worked for a

while, but if I didn't eat right away it really seemed to mess with my blood

sugar. So I've dropped down to taking it in the morning and sometimes in the

afternoon. It's not a miracle fix or anything but helps with the fatigue and

weakness.

That is so strange

Why does it zap some and energize others ?

Glucose levels and glycosylation. Age, weight, and glucose

status are factors here. Possibly also one's APOE genetics.

Also daily ongoing use vs. occasional use can make a difference

in how D-ribose acts.

I'm wondering if it has to do with the combo with caffeine. Does everyone with

good results always take it with caffeine. Does everyone with no or bad results

always take it WITHOUT caffeine?

The D-ribose/caffeine combo idea came from:

http://drmyhill.co.uk/wiki/CFS_-_The_Central_Cause:_Mitochondrial_Failure

" If the CFS sufferer asks for energy faster than he can supply it, (and actually

most CFS sufferers are doing this most of the time!) ATP is converted to ADP

faster than it can be recycled. This means there is a build up of ADP. Some ADP

is inevitably shunted into adenosine monophosphate (AMP -1 phosphate). But this

creates a real problem, indeed a metabolic disaster, because AMP, largely

speaking, cannot be recycled and is lost in urine.

Indeed this is the biological basis of poor stamina. One can only go at the rate

at which mitochondria can produce ATP. If mitochondria go slow, stamina is poor.

If ATP levels drop as a result of leakage of AMP, the body then has to make

brand new ATP. ATP can be made very quickly from a sugar D-ribose, but D-ribose

is only slowly made from glucose (via the pentose phosphate shunt for those

clever biochemists out there!). This takes anything from one to four days. So

this is the biological basis for delayed fatigue.

However there is another problem. If the body is very short of ATP, it can make

a very small amount of ATP directly from glucose by converting it into lactic

acid. This is exactly what many CFS sufferers do and indeed we know that CFS

sufferers readily switch into anaerobic metabolism. However this results in two

serious problems - lactic acid quickly builds up especially in muscles to cause

pain, heaviness, aching and soreness ( " lactic acid burn " ), secondly no glucose

is available in order to make D-ribose! So new ATP cannot be easily made when

you are really run down. Recovery takes days!

When mitochondria function well, as the person rests following exertion, lactic

acid is quickly converted back to glucose (via-pyruvate) and the lactic burn

disappears. But this is an energy requiring process! Glucose to lactic acid

produces two molecules of ATP for the body to use, but the reverse process

requires six molecules of ATP. If there is no ATP available, and this is of

course what happens as mitochondria fail, then the lactic acid may persist for

many minutes, or indeed hours causing great pain. (for the biochemists, this

reverse process takes place in the liver and is called the Cori cycle). "

....

" AMP can be recycled, but slowly. Interestingly, the enzyme which does this

(cyclic AMP) is activated by caffeine! So the perfect pick-me-up for CFS

sufferers could be a real black organic coffee with a teaspoon of D-ribose! "
