That's the first step. Swallowing problems are common in PWCs. It is neurological in origin if you are having trouble swallowing liquids. Also, this causes esophageal spasms, which are quite painful and make it impossible to eat or drink and can make breathing difficult and uncomfortable. My G.I. doc told me to take pills only with food, never with liquid. He also told me that to prevent choking on liquids to be sure my head is tipped down when swallowing. It's how stroke patients with swallowing problems are treated. It works like a charm for me. For the esophageal spasms I use a certain type of meditation and it often helps relieve the spasms.
