Guest guest
Hi, Just thought I would post a notice from Owens, Head of the Autism Oxalate Project for the Autism Research Institute. Several people with cfs have had Organic Acid Tests done at Great Plains Laboratory which have shown high levels of oxalic acid, myself included. This can be caused by dietary oxalates (in all plant based food but exceptionally high is some food like spinach, nuts, spices) entering the body via a leaky gut or being made endogenously either as a result of genetics and or nutritional deficiencies caused by an injury/chemical insult/stress. High levels of oxalates from what ever source create large amounts of oxidative stress, this in turn depletes glutathione which is central to cfs. This could be a catch 22 that is keeping the body depleted of glutathione and hence keeping us chronically ill. From the organic acid test has learnt that there is a disruption to the Glyoxylate Cycle as detailed in the document 'The Significance of the Glyoxylate Cycle to the Oxalate Story' by Owens. The Glyoxylate Cycle is part of the Krebs cycle. would like to see more Organic Acid Tests from people with cfs. These tests must be done by Great Plains Laboratory as they are the only Lab that measures for oxalic, glyceric and glycolic acids which are part of the Glyoxylate Cycle. Below is her post. > > >> > > > > Listmate, > > > > Maybe some of you on other listserves can find me some more CFS OATS. Please be on the prowl! We're learning so much from these!!!!! > > > > Regards
Guest guest
Fascinating topic, oxalates. Been doing sme research and the list of high oxylate foods reads like my daily meal chart. Spinach, nuts, chocolate, tea, wheat bran, berries, nightshades, sweet potatoes, black pepper. That's pretty much my diet. Vitamic C, I take a lot because of genetically high lp(a); Vitamin C is the only thing that helps that. Past history of antibiotics and molds. Low glutathione. Trouble detoxing metals. Hmm... Guess I'll be getting an OAT soon. Thanks for posting!
Guest guest
I have done so much better avoiding the high oxalate foods----since shared several months ago. Hard to give up spinach, and stevia!!!, but feel so much better. God Bless, Sara > > Fascinating topic, oxalates. Guest guest
Hi Doris, Yes a healthy diet = very high oxalates, but a 'healthy diet' is only for the healthy!!! It is ironic really. If you do have an oxalate problem don't be too distraught when you see all the foods you do eat on the the list of high ox food. Now knowing what the problem is my range of foods have actually increased. I couldn't eat carbohydrates for years and it wasn't because I had candida, but I did have dysibiosis. Before not understanding about oxalates I just thought I couldn't handle carbohydrates, so just ate animal protein and veg 3 times a day. But now I have muffins, pikelets and pancakes, make my own breads but made with low oxalate carbs such as coconut flour, tapioca starch, water chestnut flour. It is wonderful - I don't get brain fog, and my energy is not sapped. I also think my gut is healing by being on a low oxalate diet (6 months now). Good luck, hope you find a piece of your health puzzle to improve your quality of life. CFS etc sucks!! > > Fascinating topic, oxalates. Guest guest
I honestly don't know what to think about oxolates...just too burned out on research to dive into it... is very generous with her time though.. but I think we are guinea pigs for this protocol like all others. > > Fascinating topic, oxalates. Guest guest
Thing is I would expect most of us to be making endogenous oxolates due to a vicious cycle that susan describes... at which point.. I'm not sure you would see a huge difference from diet alone. So kinda surprised some ppl are doing so well on diet alone.... > > > > Fascinating topic, oxalates.
