Guest guest
I've been thinking of incorporating lysine into my supplements. Is it the sort of thing that can cause herxing, or does it just have a very mild effect? Thanks, Ellen

I take free form L-Lysine 1500 mg. in three divided doses per day. Guest guest
I have been taking L-Lysine (I use Twinlab) for years now, 1500 mg twice daily (AM and PM). It really helps when I can't get Valtrex or afford to buy Valtrex. It keeps me from having cold sores on my nose (never had them on my lips) and my glands from swelling from viral reactivation. I tested positive for herpes simplex, herpes six, and EBV in 2003. in La Selva Beach CA On 2/3/2011 5:35 PM, Teewinot wrote: > > ellen wrote: > > > I've been thinking of incorporating lysine into my supplements. Guest guest
What is the benefit of lysine? Are you taking 500mg three times a day? Guest guest
Jeri, Thanks for your response. Did you notice any improvements related to taking it? Guest guest
Hi Sara, Lysine is an amino acid that inhibits herpes replication. Arginine is the amino acid that promotes herpes replication. Foods rich in arginine should be avoided or reduced during a herpes outbreak or reactivation (any herpes virus except possibly HHV6 -unsure). Here is the wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysine Another interesting page: http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/amino-acid-lysine-for-herpes.html Here is an interesting pdf regarding Valtrex: http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_valtrex.pdf Valtrex is not the same formula as acyclovir. Valine has been added to acyclovir to make Valtrex. If you can't afford Valtrex, just take acyclovir and valine. I have been doing this for the past 2 months and have managed well. I take 1.5 grams (1500mg) twice a day. " The chemical name of valacyclovir hydrochloride is L-valine, 2-[(2-amino-1,6-dihydro-6-oxo-9H-purin-9-yl)methoxy]ethyl ester, monohydrochloride. It has the following structural formula: " So, I take acyclovir which is usually cheaper whether you use Insurance or not, valine and lysine and I feel that I have no viral activation. (My Valtrex prescription increased to $30/month with my insurance so I take the generic acylovir and add valine then lysine.) It is possible to purchase acyclovir and Valtrex from overseas pharmacies. Valine is easy to get online or at a local health food store. The most progress I have ever gotten was starting on acyclovir even without the valine and lysine. Apple cider vinegar and other herbal supplements work as well. ACV break the outer lipid layer of the virus. Elderberry, garlic and several other antiviral herbs work as well but acyclovir and Valtrex work so much better. Personal choice. If you read the pdf on Valtrex, you will find that taking Cimetidine and Probenecid prolongs the effect of Valtrex making treatment more effective. There is a chart showing the increases. " Cimetidine Plus Probenecid: Acyclovir Cmax and AUC following a single dose of VALTREX (1 gram) increased by 30% and 78%, respectively, after a combination of cimetidine and probenecid, primarily due to a reduction in renal clearance of acyclovir. Digoxin: The pharmacokinetics of digoxin were not affected by coadministration " Hope this helps, Marti > > > > > I've been thinking of incorporating lysine into my supplements. It helps me prevent reactivation of my viral infections that I have had (Epstein Barr Virus/Mono, herpes simples or cold sores or fever blisters which I get on my nose). If my throat glands feel swollen or sore or hard I up my lysine more. I currently take 1500 mg with my AM supplements and PM supplements. I did Valtrex for a year and that helped but it's pretty expensive if you don't have insurance. in La Selva Beach CA
Guest guest
In my experience, Lysine (L-Lysine...same thing) can cause herxing. I've suggested to at least 20 people to use it during flu season and they all have the same reaction of, " You get worse before you get better " . Same story with the other chronically ill I've sugggeted to use it more regularly. It's similar to the third day of antibiotics, which usually start killing bacteria around 72 hours, thus herx. Lysine like all amino acids is best taken on an empty stomach, for better absorption. If I haven't been taking it regularly, I start with 500 mg before bed so I sleep through the worst. Olive oil in the morning or other laxative to help move things along for the first few days is helpful to keep from reabsorbing toxins. After a few days of that I'll up to 1000 mg, then all the way to 3 grams a day, taken throughout the day. It takes me about a month to work up to that much. If I run out of Lysine or just forget to keep taking it, I start feeling like hell after a few days, then have to start the whole process over. I just, " forgot " last week, so now I'm at 1 gram, working my way back up, but feeling a little better and more active each day. I think it was in the Yasko group we discussed why it works and I think we figured it reduces arginine, another amino acid, which is viral food for replication. Our body needs arginine, but not tons of it. Most of our diets tend to be rich in arginine and low in lysine, thus the imbalance and need for 20% of folks to take lysine regularly. 20% is about how much of the population is speculated to have problems preventing common viruses from replicating. If your in this group, chances are your in that 20% ((+/- 5%)(forgot sources, remember avg %). If anyone has more info on how Lysine is so damn good at whooping viruses, please advise. All I know is I can't function without it. It's faster acting than Rx antivirals and doesn't have all those terrible side effects. In my experience, the side effects of antivirals have been debilitating. Took isolating antivirals, with no other Rx or supplements, to figure that out. But just being on an Rx antiviral should grant a person full disability, IMO. Walmart has a cheap big bottle for about $5.00. The next best deal is this huge jar made by Countryway that I've seen for about $25, but has more pills than China has men....almost. Hope that's helpful...Cheers, R

Guest guest
Hi , I don't think there was much redundancy. I forget that some people can have herx symptoms. I don't have them with Lysine or Valtrex (or acyclovir), so I forget that some people do. Important to warn about.
