Guest guest Posted September 27, 1999 Report Share Posted September 27, 1999 Hi Gail, I had blood drawn on last week because I was concerned about her thyroid having some involvement in why she's growing so slowly (9#4oz at four months compared to who's now 15#+!). They drew the blood from the inside of her elbow, just like an adult. The dr sent me to the hospital so that a nurse familiar with drawing blood on an infant would be available (from the NICU if necessary) rather than going to a regular lab. They did a very good job and she didn't scream nearly so much as when she had her three vaccines last week! BTW, the lab work came back normal but I didn't ask how it compared to her test at birth. My boys were born w/congenital hypothyroidism, they've been on synthroid since they were 3 weeks old. The got their blood tested ALOT the first year (because of the rapid growth that takes place). It was always from a vein. Luckily, I found a lab who has a wonderful tech who is just great with little ones! She usually finds the vein on the first try! Jeanne, Make sure the phlebotomist knows you pass out and they will draw you while you are lying down. They can use a warm towel to swell the veins in your arm or hand and use a butterfly to get the small veins if possible. They don't need to see the veins, they only need to feel them. Ok crossing my arms, getting that stern " you will do as I say " mother look. I don't care if you turn green, purple or stripped. I don't care if you pass out or puke on somebody....you WILL be a big girl and get not only these labs drawn...but every lab that will be required for the rest of your life....If you can't " buck up " and do this then don't attend the " grand opening " ! It truely is that simple. Being phobic about the blood draws I really want you to consider if you are going to be compliant. I don't want you to think... " I'll just take double my vitamins, calcium and eat tons of protein that way I won't have to have blood drawn because I will be ok " ....That just won't cut it. Ok, ok I know that your post didn't say anything like that...it's just that I have warning bells going off in my head. I want you to FULLY commit to the surgery and all that it requires. I want you to get healthier and to stay that way. Take someone with you to the lab. Take some control...Tell them you pass out. Ask for the person who is " best " at hard draws (they know who this is...after all it is the person they call to come do it after they try and can't hit the vein). Tell them to NOT talk. Tell them to use a butterfly needle. Tell them your a hard draw and to use heat to expand the veins. Take your support person with you and have them chat about something other than the blood draw. Bring an Ice pack and place on your forhead or neck to keep you cool and take nice " slow " deep breaths. And drink water like crazy for a couple days before so your very hydrated and will have nice plump veins. And then who cares if you pass out...as long as they are prepared for it and you don't hurt yourself...who friggin cares, your going to be thinner next year!!!! Some can draw fewer because they do them inhouse and send others off. Also some have to be frozen, while others need special handling or chemicals and preservatives. My 6 months labs were 6 vials done here at Gadsden regional. When you go the lab will ask if you ARE fasting...I have told them NO...my Doctor TOLD me I didn't need to be for HIM. Ann has Dr. K's office told YOU that you need to fast? (for one thing he isn't worried about diabeties or cholestrol) Dawn told me Dr. K had rather see what your lab results are normally through the day as you eat and such...not what they would be under " abnormal " conditions like fasting. The " no need to fast " applies to our " routine " labs. If Dr. K orders extra labs it is best to ask. If you do your labs fasting that is ok too. You just don't NEED to. It sure does make it easier because you don't have to run out first thing in the morning and get them done so you can go get something to eat. The Lab WILL ask and feel you need to be fasting.
