Guest guest
I saw Dr Chia on Wednesday and he does not believe XMRV is the cause of CFIDS. He had not read the paper ( which I found surprising), but thinks the virus is a result of a dysfunctional immune system. He used the chicken and egg analogy, with him clearly on the side of XMRV not as a cause. He believes his enterovirus theory as the cause of the dysfunctional immune system. He seemed very frustrated over the lack of funding support for his research and the funding support for WPI by NIH and NCI. I was very disappointed to hear this, but time will tell who is right. I'm a 54 year old male, sick since May 1986, sudden onset, previously healthy and athletic, multiple relapses. Lynn
Guest guest
Dr CHia is also my CFS doctor. I think the man is brilliant, but maybe it would be heart breaking for him to find out that his 15 years of research have gone down the drain with this new XMRV virus finding. If he hasnt read the research paper, then I wonder if he knows its a retrovirus. I dont think a dysfunctional immune system could produce such a thing. If it was any other kind of virus, I would also think " which came first, the chicken or the egg? " , but its not a regular common virus like EBV, HHV6, CMV, echo, or CBV. Its a Retrovirus, much like HIV. They are a class of viruses known for disabling the immune system. With HIV, you dont die of HIV infection, you die as a result of another infection being able to thrive uncontrolled and that kills you. But on another note, I am still sticking with Dr Chia since my CVB4 titer was 1:640 and I am among his top sickest patients. Maybe when he does read the research paper, he will have to decide to " roll with the punches " , since he has been a CFS specialist for a long time.... Guest guest
Hi Rick, My experiences with Dr. Chia was he was not willing to accept any new literature from me on new research discoveries. Finally, after telling him about my positive cigaterra test, he said he would like a copy, but did not understand it. Next, I don't believe his claims that Oxymatrine helps half his patients. I asked several who used it, and all had to quit quit because they felt worse. Al > > Dr CHia is also my CFS doctor. Guest guest
thanks, always good to get the thoughts of a ME/CFS dr. that said, I think I will side with XRMV causing a dysfunctional immune sytem than an enterovirus anyday. It just makes more sense as a retrovirus actually weakens an immune system where as it is my understanding anyway that an enterovirus doesnt. The above being the case, I am surprised by Dr. Chia's response, and disappointed as to me it shows he is being inflexible. It could be (well likely is) with XRMV, that other viruses including enteroviruses are reactivated or the body simply cant keep them under check.
